Day 13: Favorite “b” film noir.
“Sims. Homicide. Because murder is my business. And midnight is my beat.”-Det. Lt. Sims (Sterling Hayden from the trailer.)
Love the grit in this one and the on location shots in L.A.

Today’s watch: “J” is for “Johnny O’Clock” (1947). "Dry your eyes and blow your nose—in the order named."
Powell spitting one liners for 90 straight minutes. Perfect.

Day 11: Favorite Bar Scene
Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator to the Gallows) 1958.
A Parisian club where Florence (Jeanne Moreau) is in desperate search of her lover, Julien. Pure fatigue with Miles Davis’s score score crowning scene.

Today’s watch: “I” is for “Inside Detroit” (1956). One that oozes UAW union vs. mob at the b-level. Worth the watch, but don’t tell ‘em I tipped you off.

Day 10: Favorite Gloria Grahame in a Noir Film: “In A Lonely Place” (1950). The Academy could have handed these two a statuette and been spot on with their picks.

Today’s watch: “H” is for “Hi-Jacked” (1950). Terrific 66 minute gem that makes you truly cheer for our framed up hero. Plus, a number of stops at a neat little truck stop diner where the coffee flows.☕️

Day 9: Favorite Dan Duryea in a Noir Film
I’ll toss in with “Scarlet Street” (1945). Loved how he was “formally” introduced with a record skipping in the background. Brilliant as was everyone’s performance.

Today’s watch: “G” is for “Gun Crazy” (1950). Not going to get much more certifiably “off her rocker” femme fatale-ish than Annie Laurie Star (Peggy Cummins). OK, Anne Savage in Detour, but considering Annie’s aim, well….
And for the record, one of the best noir posters!

Day 8: Favorite Line in Film Noir: J.J. Hunsecker: “Son, I don’t relish shooting a mosquito with an elephant gun, so why don’t you just shuffle along?”
Love all Lancaster’s acerbic quips in “Sweet Smell of Success” (1957)

Today’s watch: “F” is for “Fingerprints Don’t Lie” (1951). This is on one of my forgotten noir box sets. I can see why it made the cut. Think of it as an early, low budget inspiration for CSI.

Coolest Film Noir Character: Marie "Slim" Browning played by Lauren Bacall in her debut film, “To Have and Have Not” (1944). Controls the narrative. Tames Bogey? That is a new level of coolness.

Day 5: Film noir you’d show someone that has never seen one. Toughy. I’ll take “The Killers” (1946). Has all the elements plus the bonus of the first few scenes that leaves the first time watcher saying, “What the hell just happened?”

Today’s watch: “C” is for “Canon City” (1948). Nice little jailbreak b-film that predictably moves along with elements of narration, on location shots of the Colorado state penitentiary, and cameos of a few familiar character actors.
And DeForest Kelley as Smalley!
