Spirit Origin RPG

A High Fantasy TTRPG with deep character building options and zone based combat designed by Four Brothers Games designer Tito J Davis
I'm planning to wait to release the game until after I've got things to release it with, that being an adventure or two and crucially - A Novel in the setting.

Took a long hiatus and returned about a month ago and dear lord has it opened my eyes. system was a bit overwritten. funny how time can reveal so much. best thing is it wasn't even hard to refine and get what i actually wanted out of it. simpler, leaner, gives the experience i want as a player

I created quite a long time ago a scale for faction reputation when I was GMing for my friends and it has survived unchanged into Spirit Origin. It slides from a -5 to a 7 where each step on the scale represents your standing with the faction. #gamedesign #ttrpg

Just have a few minutes on my lunch today so I'll talk about Pursuit. Pursuit is a mechanic where the players or a single player upsets another person or faction to the point that faction would send someone after them. #ttrpg #gamedesign

Dual wielding was a tough one to figure with the three action system but what I ended up with was two separate ideas. I was agonizing about it and my partner (never played a ttrpg) said "well when zuko does it they act as a single blade" so that's where I started. #ttrpg #gamedesign

After a small hiatus I'm back, today I'll be talking about the Oracle tradition. Oracle allows you to read thoughts, suggest things to weak minds, send messages and eventually converse telepathically, scry objects beasts and men, and more combat oriented things #ttrpg #gamedesign

Illusion and Enchantment. This one mixes what is probably the most esoteric spellcrafting and the most straightforward spells that just get upgraded each tier. The spells are hypnotize, charm, suggest, sleep, fear, stuff like that, mind affecting spells, also invisibility #gamedesgin #ttrpg

Transmutation is about changing your or someone else's body in some way. There are a few different uses. There are the general Stat buffs you can give, giving an animal part to aide in some skill or multiple (monkey tail for climbing etc.) or things to help against the environment #gamedesign #ttrpg

Telekinesis, as promised, is our topic of the day. This one was tricky. I eventually ended up with a system where size relative to the character size categories (same as ol' D&D 3.5) is how you determine what you can lift, push, throw etc. There's a few other things it can do too #gamedesign #ttrpg

Time to start talking Magic. Magic works on a point resource system where each class gets a certain number of points to spend that increases by level. I've taken to calling these MP or Magic points, but that could also be Mana Points, or PP for power points, oy. #gamedesign #ttrpg
January 13, 2025 at 4:09 PM
Our final class, the Beast Rider. The Beast Rider gets a special mount that acts similarly to an animal companion, but with expanded magical creature options. Right now I have Griffon, Pegasus, Hippogriff, Roc, Wyvern, Unicorn, Rhino/Triceratops and Warg. #gamedesign #ttrpg
January 12, 2025 at 6:09 PM
Second to last class, the Monk! The Monk is primarily concerned with martial art styles that you learn and switch in and out of and eventually can combine. These styles give the player a general benefit and then some more extreme advantages against specific enemy types. #ttrpg #gamedesign

Wizard is the class of the day. Surprise, they delve into being the best spellcasters they can be. Wizards can start with access to 3 Magical Traditions of their choice but can also choose fewer in exchange for more learned spells per level. #ttrpg #gamedesign

Posting these before I get started on posting the class of the day today. painted by me (first two) and my partner (second two)

huge long shot because it seems to not exist anywhere but: does anyone have the Dungeons and Dragons Basic Game (2004) box set with the black dragon on the cover? I've been trying to hunt down the PDFs and can only find the red box. #dnd #ttrpg

Primal Warriors are half casters that can be like a ranger, a barbarian, or cleric. They have high martial skill, but also get access to one aspect of spirit magic, and an animal companion. They can also trade out the animal companion for access to transmutation magic. #ttrpg #gamedesign

was working on my quick start rules during all my spare minutes at work today and through my break and the file on my flash drive corrupted. Really frustrating that a couple hours of work go down the drain for no reason.

The fighter is simple. It's the class that gets the most inherent ability to combat the setbacks given by environmental effects on attack rolls and combat maneuvers. It can play into the poise system, get stronger armor and extra combat feats but the real gem is not slipping on wet floors
January 7, 2025 at 5:32 PM
Today I'll talk about the fighter and now it'll make sense why I'm talking about the boost setbacks today. It is encouraged for every room to have setbacks for some sort of checks, be that low visibility, wet floors, high winds, fear effects, something. #ttrpg #gamedesign
January 7, 2025 at 5:30 PM
Now I have to talk about the Boost Setback system. Especially since it all came together for me at like 2am last night about how a few details of it fit together.

So rolls, rather than flat bonuses will have dice boosts or setbacks. The only flat bonuses are from Attributes #ttrpg #gamedesign

Rogues, in addition to boosting their abilities with these three systems, they can also get class feats to help them with assassin work and poisons, Disguises, speaking with a silver tongue, and more.
January 6, 2025 at 5:16 PM
The Third, a system that's also available to the monk and fighter, is the Poise system. The Poise system is like the Flair system where it builds up points for a finishing move, but Poise is built up by not being hit. Each attack that misses builds up a poise point. Think, Samurai waiting to strike
January 6, 2025 at 5:14 PM
The second system is the Flair System. A rogue that does moves with flair during combat, tumbling around combatants jumping on tables or swinging on chandeliers, they will build up Flair Points. As long as the Rogue doesn't fail a flair move they can then spend them on a high damage finishing move
January 6, 2025 at 5:13 PM
First is Sneak Attack, and that is pretty self explanatory. When attacking from a hidden position the Rogue can get extra damage dice on their hits. The rogue is the only class that has the ability to hide in inner-zone cover during combat.
January 6, 2025 at 5:12 PM
Today is the Rogue class. The rogue has access to three systems to get more damage out of single attacks depending on what type of rogue you would like to play (and as always with Spirit Origin, you can mix and match progressing in all three at various levels). #ttrpg #gamedesign
