1/3: Soldiers’ letters home in the 1WW share a blend of reassurance, understatement & the quiet details of daily life. With letters censored, what survived on the page was often the monotony of trench routine & the instinct to protect loved ones from the truth.

When SGWT began, I imagined we’d simply be a licensed travel company, organising tours to battlefields. Over time, we’ve become something much deeper: a place for families to connect, discover & honour their own stories. Read more about our work here: tinyurl.com/5n7xbs7c

Remembrance Sunday services are taking place across the UK today.

I will pause for 2 minutes at 11am, on the banks of Loch Lomond. A silence to think of those that made the ultimate sacrifice and to give thanks for all that played their part.

Retracing the #WW1 footsteps of Rifleman Sidney Jenner, who was posted from 1/5 London Rifle Bde to 18 KRRC in 1917/18.

This afternoon I took his grandson to the spot where he was gassed, on 3rd Sept 1918, near Vierstraat. He survived the war, but only just.

Privilege to be showing this gentleman where his grandfather fought in the #FWW, with the 1/5 London Rifle Bde, on behalf of @sophie1wwtours.bsky.social.

This afternoon I took him to where Combles Trench once stood, a position his grandfather helped attack in early Sept 1916.

#OTD in 1914, the First Battle of Ypres opens.

'Favourite' is a difficult term to use sometimes when it comes to battlefields. What I mean by that in this case is, that I love taking guests to these early Great War engagements.

1/3: This epitomises what we do here at Sophie's Great War Tours. A tour is so much more than a journey through history. This photo captures one of those powerful moments, when hours of research, heartfelt storytelling & the uncovering of a family’s wartime story come together.

Guiding a Maori client in the footsteps of his Gt Grandfather, who was wounded on 7/6/17 at Messines.

Took him to the NZ memorial there, and - in an otherwise cloudless sky - this fern shaped cloud appeared above where we were.

What began as a European crisis quickly became a global catastrophe. Over the next 4 years, more than 16 million people would be killed, including almost 1 million from Britain & her empire.
