Thoughtful essay from Tom Stevenson about how Trump's real break with the US foreign policy establishment is his "withdrawal of the justificatory ideology of American power": "Trump is not an isolationist, to the extent the term has any useful meaning."

Since the US election I have largely eschewed all news of any kind except that specifically needed for my job and frankly I think it's been good for my mental health.

First try to win the election. If you can't win, then strip the your opponent of the power they've won. Democracy in the US in on its last legs.

For the $7 million CNN was paying Chris Wallace, the network can afford to hire 46 journalists at pretty decent salaries. It seems like a no-brainer to me that those journalists could provide a lot more value for the company's new digital subscription strategy than any one anchor.

If you hadn't learned the lesson long ago: the Russian exile opposition class deserves our sympathy as people who have suffered tremendous loss. if they share facts about things still going on among the emigrant community, listen. But they can't be treated like a serious force for change
Last month, as another 30 days of war passed in Ukraine, Russian activists, economists, and politicians in the exiled anti-Kremlin opposition spent much of their time arguing about a banking scandal from the last decade. Here's what that mess is all about. https://buff.ly/48Ckh6B

"The algorithm" feeding me this tweet with an amazingly on-point yet completely random article that I then wanted to share with all my friends, for a moment made me feel like it was 2014 and not rapidly approaching some kind of civilizational cliff-edge.

There's so much we don't know - but sadly, based on what I've seen in other countries taken over by authoritarian-leaning kleptocrats, this is a plausible scenario.

Thinking about the difference between Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan -- CR definitely dons an exaggerated persona, whereas TS sells herself as totally authentic. And then you get CR freaking out because of a fandom that wants the same kind of access to her as Taylor gets.

Remember that you CANNOT register to vote online in Texas. You have to fill out a form online and then print it and mail it in order to get an application which will then be mailed to you and which you then have to mail back. Go to your local election office to apply right there to save time.
The ghouls who run our state maintain an antiquated, time-consuming, and anti-democratic voter registration system, and will happily purge you from the voter rolls. Make sure you're still registered.
