Time for a 🧵. Many of you have heard me complain that Alexandria City is hostile to bikers and has made no effort to create safe bike routes between any points of interest in the city. This case study looks at Mount Vernon Rec Center to Charles Houston Rec Center (1.5 mi.). Here's the Google route.
I want my $2 flights. Where do I sign up?

"Deeply Concerned" is the left's "thoughts and prayers"
USAID advances U.S. national security and helps ensure global stability. I’m deeply concerned about Musk and Trump’s attempt to destroy USAID. That's why I led my colleagues in a letter to Secretary of State Rubio demanding answers about this illegal and unprecedented action.

Having been a #SpecialGovernmentEmployee in support of various DoD & IC elements, this caught my attention. As it turns out, there are legally binding rules to being an SGE. I would love to see the signed paperwork. Now things get interesting. #elonmusk www.cnn.com/2025/02/03/p...

This loss is on Murray. He had a clear path to the basket and instead hid in the corner. Cutting off his route is as brain-dead a decision as Shedrick failing to come back to the ball against Furman in 2023.

Rohde haters aren't going to want to hear this, but this is his team, not McKneely's or Murray's.

Yes, remnant snow cover from previous storms still visible in the DC area.

Some have noticed that I sometimes take an officiating perspective when watching basketball. In a way, being a official's son is not all that different from being a coach's son. www.coastalbreezenews.com/lifestyles/r...

Since the Supreme Court did not note the absence of a federal privacy bill that might curb the ability of foreign adversaries to snoop on Americans--either through apps or by buying it from data brokers--I made a point of reminding PCMag readers of that angle to the TikTok story.
Supreme Court Upholds TikTok Ban, Finds No First Amendment Violations
The justices found the government’s concerns over potential privacy abuses at TikTok persuasive, especially if users oblige the TikTok app’s requests for contacts and calendar data.

I've seen this take many different ways over the years, but I suspect it is wrong because a) the message IS aimed at drivers, if indirectly b) encouraging awareness all around is never a bad thing.
Since we don't have controlled experiments to draw from, I'd like to hear what psychologists think.
Literally the Virginia DMV. "But for pedestrians, [drivers'] attention span is limited. So when you cross the street, don't forget to look for cars. They'll stop for ducklings, but they might not stop for you."

If you are late tackling your sidewalk, which has now turned to ice, do not despair. Put the shovel away and use your humble half-moon edger to shatter the ice instead. A few taps in a vertical motion will break it into chunks.

Your occasional reminder that Amtrak is not currently viable for day trips with any kind of schedule. Hopefully we will reach the point where we can take VRE and won't be stuck rolling the dice with NEC trains.
On the plus side, paying the 10% premium for a fully refundable ticket paid off.

Let's try another Alexandria bike thread. This time the goal is to provide a safe route from King St. station to City Hall. Here is the Google recommendation, but as you will see, it is not that simple.
