Polish PM Donald Tusk, speaking before his flight to London for the European Ukraine summit:

“500 million Europeans are asking 300 million Americans to defend them against 140 million Russians. [...] Europe today lacks the belief that we are truly a global force.”

This is Winston Churchill visiting the White House during World War II.

Funny how he isn’t wearing a suit either. Almost like he was a wartime leader defending his country from being slaughtered and wiped out by an authoritarian aggressor.

I find this very moving: a 10-year-old Ukrainian boy who moved to the West of Ireland 2 years ago as a refugee, speaking in Irish of his love of playing Irish music

Here's a riddle: one country has a dictator with no real elections, the other one doesn't. Which is which?

Ok, slivers of light in this analysis of Tr*mp’s dark dealings with Putin. All of them centre on Europeans exerting their own agency and taking bold steps as to offer security to Ukraine: ramping up supplies to Ukraine, EU membership, troops in the field and doubling down on sanctions.
Ok folks, deep breaths.

There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome.

(A rather long 🧵, obviously)

Superb piece by Anne Applebaum in TheAtlantic, in which she argues that Musk, Zuckerberg and their ilk are trying to weaken European democracy and operate in an Unconstrained regulatory environment.

The European Commission must act to protect EU democracy.

Happy Nollaig na mBan (Womens Christmas) to all the wonderful women in my family and friends.
January 6, is known in Ireland as Nollaig na mBan. It was a day off from all house work for women and traditional roles were reversed in the home. Many women will meet socially today for lunch/dinner

Just been to my six year-old's nativity play at his S Dublin school. Kids from Turkey, China, India, S Africa, Kenya.

They all sang Away in a Manger in Irish, Sa stábla, sa mháinséar. Loudly, enthusiastically.

This is modern Ireland. The attractiveness of our culture, the warmth of its welcome.
