Major victory for writers here:
Some rare good news: Journalists at the PEN Guild won their arbitration case against Politico, which deployed two separate faulty AI products (a "report builder" and a headline and summary generator on the homepage) without their knowledge or input.

That violated their contract, the arbiter found.
Journalists win a key battle over AI in the newsroom
PLUS: Artists fight for an AI transparency law in the belly of the beast, a Spotify mass deletion event, and an interview with a top video games journalist about AI and labor.

If you run across a gen A.I. slop 🤖💩 diagram in an academic journal, I’d love to know about it! Please fill out this form:

Slop in journals is illuminating about journals’ quality control. And journals would like you to forget their mistakes.

one of the things Weizenbaum really nails is that our propensity to believe machine intelligence rivals our own is embedded in a deeper view of humans as being basically machines, that the ELIZA Effect is in part a product of our spiritual and cultural empoverishment... it seems the woke pope agrees
Pope Leo XIV told students not to use artificial intelligence for homework, saying that AI ‘won’t stand in authentic wonder before the beauty of God’s creation.’

The Raccoonobahn was firmly the GreyFoxobahn last night. This grey fox was living his/her best grey fox life in-between the fences last night.

After a quiet few days, things ramped up last night with a buck mule deer rubbing/destroying part of our moonlight broom. video to follow. #mammals

"Students are afraid to fail, and AI presents itself as a savior. But what we learn from history is that progress requires failure. It requires reflection. Students are not just undermining their ability to learn, but to someday lead."
Beautifully written & reasoned 3 min read. “To my students and to anyone who might listen, I say: Don’t surrender to AI your ability to read, write and think when others once risked their lives and died for the freedom to do so.”

Just a year after four dams were removed, a group of fall Chinook have migrated nearly 300 miles into the Upper Klamath Basin.

Here, in vast clouds of gas & dust 15 000 light-years away from Earth, stars are being born. Meanwhile, giant pillars, light-years across, are formed as winds from the young stars batter the surrounding material.
