Nature, Women's Sports, Equal Rights...just trying to enjoy the world and make it enjoyable. Dftba.
Millennial joys of the holidays: everyone your parents' generation asking if you're still renting that place, then talking about how they just bought a second (or third) property and are renting it on airBnB.

In technical/academic writing, you should always explain abbreviations, e.g. i.e. (i.e. id est), etc.

Summer weekends: when you have to choose between a concert (the Durufle Requiem!), watching your top two wnba teams face each other, or playing soccer with friends... tough choices but I think I can handle this life.

I have a growing section of books on my shelf that are written by personal friends and I find that pretty amazing and incredibly lucky. 🩶

Just one book finished in April but dang was it a good one.

Anyone else on Storygraph? What are y'all reading lately?

It's hard to keep being a fan when all your team does is score own goals. USA front office needs to make some serious changes as soon as the trade window opens up. We have plenty of home grown talent... can we get a potus team that understands "ball in net" isn't good if it's your *own* net?

Descanse en Paz, Pope Francis. You consistently gave me holy envy that the Catholic Church had such a compassionate leader who consistently spoke out to defend the poor, the immigrant, and what Jesus might recognize as 'the least of these'. Your leadership brought many to live in a more godly way.

So many of my family and friends have received care and benefitted from research and treatment at the U's Huntsman Cancer Institute. It is one of the things I most dearly want government funding to direct my tax dollars to. Removing that funding for no reason is inhumane, and also unconstitutional.

We're literally swimming in evidence that Elon and Trump are dishonest but people are still blindly trusting them for some reason.
Just got a tip from a guy at the FAA. You'll never believe who is still getting new government contracts while all the contracts at the Department of Education and USAID and other agencies are being nuked from orbit.

Are Utah legislators unhappy with a vote by mail system that continues to re-elect them? The fact they want these changes shows they are listening more to the national GOP drivel than their own constituents. And it makes me wonder about their critical thinking skills.

The CFPB shutdown is a flashing warning that no one in the Trump administration is interested in better or more efficient consumer financial regulation.

Trump is aiming to slam a wrecking ball into a critical oversight agency that safeguards consumers from unfair and predatory business…

"According to a survey carried out by the National Council of Agricultural Employers in 2020, just 337 US-born workers applied for the 97,691 season agricultural jobs advertised between March and May that year."

Hiring 'americans' is not a viable plan.

Favorite NWSL team: Utah Royals

WNBA: Las Vegas Aces

Unrivaled: Lunar Owls, Rose

PWHL: ? Need to watch more and make a pick but I love what they're doing.

Who you got for your favorite women's sports teams?
February 11, 2025 at 12:10 PM
Obviously.

I'm still mostly for old school books and library browsing is a great way to find your next pick.

I also love getting past pay walls thanks to the library system.

I used to love google products, but there's something about abandoning your "don't be evil" motto that just signals... you're planning to be evil.

Next big project is to get off gmail. I'm done having them read all my emails.
We think they should be powerful enough to afford principles. They think they have a lot to lose (and they lost their "don't be evil" motto a long time ago). Google, you coward, you quisling.

We have to be asking ourselves how to hold someone accountable who appears to not believe in accountability. We have a republic...if we can keep it.
They are going to ignore court orders.

If they ignore court orders, the social contract is dead and buried, the constitution is no longer in effect.

It's a rubicon that cannot be uncrossed.

This is an estimate of how Utah would be affected by the proposed NIH indirect cuts, based on published F&A rates and funding. Original thread goes through for all the states.
Utah: In 2024, 3 schools received a total of $290 million in NIH grant funds. Of that, $188 million went directly to research and $102 million went to facilities and administration. The new rate would bring that to $29 million, a loss of $73 million.

Discourse with fellow Americans, especially online, is growing more and more impossible. What do you do to find/create productive conversation with people who don't already agree with you?

Project 2025 attacking institutions like NOAA, USAID, PBS, and everything else they'll put on the chopping block is theft, rooted in oligarchy and white supremacy.
Not just mariners, but farmers, aviators, cities, emergency services, anyone needing good weather information.

We PAID FOR those satellites, weather stations, and the generations of research that created this system. To turn it over to a private enterprise would be theft from the American people.

Losing NOAA would be devastating. Project 2025 authors want to get rid of it because it monitors climate change, and privatize the information it currently provides for free, so you'll have to buy information about the weather and the winds (imperative for mariners).
