it would be really cool to do intarsia wood art using only the natural colours of wood for people. i've had this idea for a while but i don't think it would be worth it, the time and money spent sourcing special woods, cutting and sanding them to shape, it'd have to sell for a pretty steep cost

i have to wonder what kind of person would rent out an entire shake shack for a private event with white tablecloths and formal clothing and stuff

i like seeing these kinds of satellite imagery errors on google maps. imagine if they really did have a random kink in the road like this

i got my hands on a rare fruit! garcinia madruno, sometimes known a charichuela or lemon drop mangosteen but the latter name also refers to garcinia intermedia. it tastes like a pleasantly lemony tropical sour candy, and sometimes i get hints of mangosteen which is itself a quite complex flavour

had a dream i had a cheese pizza that was sitting out in a bag for a week growing mold and i was hungry so i ate it

i had to freeze some of these for 5-6 months to get all these together

the top two are two "red" kiwi varieties, and the bottom two are golden and green kiwis.

one of the dishes i've always wanted to make from scratch, is a chinese wheat starch noodle with steamed gluten. it's also a dish i've always wondered why it was invented cuz it's a lot of effort, but a lot of human culinary history has people trying to make the same thing more interesting

got some rose hips and made a drink with it!

these ones are quite sour and have a herbal/medicinal taste to them. not really my thing. the seeds also have tiny hairs that will irritate your insides. i believe these are from the dog rose?

i've had better rose hips from the chestnut rose honestly

my design ideas are getting so elaborate i need to chill out and not plan out a box with hidden hinges made of wood and an intarsia design on the front. it's probably been almost a decade since i've worked with wood so i gotta brush up on basics first

mixed-use zoning is pretty cool but sometimes i wonder if people ever get confused and accidentally go into the bubble tea shop downstairs instead of going home

i fermented some winter bamboo shoots for a month! i'm like, 80% sure most of the cyanide should be gone now so i'll blanch them before stir frying

these also don't smell that bad, i've bought some that are absolutely pungent and that stink up my place for a few days but these are quite mild

i didn't put this calamondin tree outside this year cuz i took a bunch of trips and acclimatizing it each time i bring it back inside would have been a pain but it does have some fruit that's almost turned orange. it's about an inch in diameter and i really only use these guys for drinks

been rearranging blocks of wood on my bed for the past quarter hour (nobody says that whoops) trying to figure out what the best-looking arrangement of them is
October 17, 2025 at 9:38 PM
i love wood

the way i make pan sauces really is just throwing random bullshit together. it's like, i'll throw in some shallots and garlic. ah, what the hell, why not make a dark roux. maybe some balsamic. add some stock, of course. oh i've got some dried mushrooms, might as well. a bit of mustard too.

i taped my freezer shut to keep everything from falling out but eventually even several 3-foot long strips of duct tape failed and the door burst open while i was sleeping so now i gotta use up 10 lbs of berries. not that i'm complaining. when life gives you lemons,

i used to always avoid touristy parts of town but it's kinda cool to hear all the different languages and accents. today was a lot of british accents, couple of australian, and then i heard mandarin, korean, and french, all within a couple of minutes. all excited and talking about the same thing.

sometimes i scroll through r/whatsthisplant and either see the luckiest motherfuckers on earth with a bounty of super tasty uncommon fruits growing in their yard, or i see a pic of someone holding a super toxic plant. and then there's pics of a tree that's super far away with not enough detail to ID

back in first year bio, we had several labs where we had to identify native and invasive plants

but before we started, a TA called me out in front of everyone and said that i wasn't allowed to help anyone out because the others needed to learn how to do it themselves without asking me

oh i see, the blue jays are all very upset because there's a red-tailed hawk flying around. it had an impressive wingspan but i couldn't take a pic of it :(
October 8, 2025 at 2:50 PM
found some wild grapes!

these are not something i think most people should try because it's easy to confuse them with the poisonous moonseed. personally i think these guys also taste like poison. not that i tried these.

the blue jays love em, though. there were like, 20 of them just hopping around

couldn't find fresh ones so, from top, clockwise: large cranberry (v. macrocarpon), small cranberry (v. oxycoccos), lingonberry (v. vitis-idaea). it seems like the smaller they are, the more flavourful and complex and sweeter they are. i get why that old lady was excited about the lingonberries

it's kinda interesting to see how my aesthetic preferences change. when i moved out, i went super minimalist and got only all-white furniture with rectangular shapes and refrained from putting anything up on the walls. i think that was probably a reaction to how my parents preferred darker tones

for several very confused moments i thought mario's name was harold
