A small intro!
I'm Cade (aka Shibco), I run a small research group from Berlin called newdesigncongress.org. We do a weird mix of digital security/threat modeling, and research ecologies, subculture resilience, digital identity, and data/interface politics.
I'm also quietly designing a video game.

Yesterday I was on a train towards Ostkreuz, one of the main stations in Berlin, when a neo-Nazi couple, a man and a woman, got on and stood next to me. The man was obviously fascist: for one thing, apart from his hairstyle and general demeanour, he was wearing a Team Germany t-shirt. He also had the build of a buffalo, after years spent in the gym. The woman, in all black, was less easy to spot, but her energy gave her away: she was scanning her surroundings with a quiet hostility. They got off the train and she turned and looked at me for a long while and said a few things to her partner, then they went downstairs to the far-right protest. And I thought: this is your identity, this is how you live: you get dressed thinking of us, you go to bed at night thinking of us. You dedicate your wardrobe to hate. A rage-fuelled existence sounds exhausting, but maybe it’s satisfying - either way, it’s all-consuming. And I thought, I don’t like it, but I think I get it. No wonder you’re so invested in it. This is how you choose to spend your Saturdays, this is all you have.

The reaction in today’s Financial Times to JD Vance’s devastatingly awful Munich speech.

"A senior diplomat said: 'It’s very clear now, Europe is alone.' When I asked him if he now regarded the US as an adversary, he replied: 'Yes.'”
If Vance hoped to persuade his audience, rather than simply insult it, he failed. Indeed, his speech backfired spectacularly, convincing many listeners that America itself is now a threat to Europe. In the throng outside the conference hall, a prominent German politician told me: “That was a direct assault on European democracy.” A senior diplomat said: “It’s very clear now, Europe is alone.” When I asked him if he now regarded the US as an adversary, he replied: “Yes.”

The thing about "ai ethics" is that the people using the tool don't go to your conferences. So even if you get the devs onboard--putting aside questions of poisoning the ethics well by inviting palantir or whoever into the room--you're missing out on end users. Whose demands devs need to meet!

When you add someone to a #starterpack or #list, Bluesky will not notify them.

Once a user somehow figures out they've been added to either, they CANNOT REMOVE THEMSELVES.

Their only option is to report.

This year, one-third of coral cover has been destroyed in two northern sections of the Great Barrier reef due to anthropogenic heating.

Results for the southern sections (which were even hotter) have not been officially released.
