I should probably add a first post to confirm yes, I am an actual person. I never had an account on that other unpleasant site, but I am familiar with it. This could end up being my first and last post. Regardless, if you're reading this, hello and I hope you have a good day. Go be nice to someone.
A good article that gets better towards the end. Hilarious the site comments are predictably brigaded by some of the very same people mentioned; entitled outrage their opinions aren't being considered worthy of anything but the bin in a democratic society.

Have another Prosecco, you collaborators.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: Great article by @NeilMackay - one of the few UK mainstream journalists telling the truth on this subject. Interview with Lois Shearing on how women are playing a key role in the rise of the Far Right - including by demonising trans people www.heraldscotland.com/politics/247...

Consistent moderation rules are vital. But malicious actors game them, and you have to be willing to go sicko mode on them, letting them rules-lawyer you from the phantom zone.

There are downstream effects from such a maneuver that benefit the platform.

This cannot be overstated: if you've seen anything about trans people via the newspapers, BBC, government ministers, or even bookshops - most of it isn't merely inaccurate, it's deliberate, calculated, malicious lies and propaganda, or baseless bigoted conspiracy theories at best.
If you're cis, one thing I'd like to impart with regards to trans people is that you are being lied to on an almost unfathomable scale, from billionaires like Musk, to religious fundamentalist groups, to print and broadcast media, to entire governments, they're committed to spreading malinformation.
Literally this.

If you are a cis person, even if you are an expert in some field that affects trans people, and you *think* you know some facts about trans people, I can almost guarantee you believe some things that are insanely wrong.

So about ten years ago I found a small network of bots on Reddit dedicated to spreading hate. The thing about it is that these weren't even responding to political topics - they were just responding to random keywords with insults and hate.

The same bots are now here. You should understand why. 🧵
this is kind of a niche issue but: if you are getting weird and hostile responses that feel a little off, there are some folks on here making accounts that automatically reply to large quantities of posts in a vaguely hostile manner. you can ignore them, and also, it's not personal

There is a huge overlap. Similar economic interests and strategists import the gambits here. The introduction of abortion into the Aus debate is an example. Many of the old centrist (left-er) parties face same trap: johnmenadue.com/sado-populis...

We life in very different universes. In my universe, it has very much caught on in the UK and the UK media have been cheering at every turn resulting in a very real, tangible impact on my life.

Others live in a universe that doesn't even see that stuff is happening.
In the UK, Farage has decided to take the pay of US evangelical groups. He’s now spouting anti-abortion tripe and will go full-on MAGA anytime soon.

I don’t think it’ll play in the UK. The real danger is if the media starts making this sort of stuff part of the “conversation”.

Why do I care about addressing science mis- and disinformation?

Because I’m a scientist & science is my lifelong passion.
Because science impacts ALL of us everyday, whether people acknowledge it.

But most of all:
It causes harm.

It’s pretty clear the DOGE operation is going to take snippets of grant proposals and papers, present them out of context, and direct weaponized harassment of individual people.
