Headphone listening was the real killer of unique stereo fields in popular music. Stereo mixes from the 50s and 60s sounds crazy as fuck in headphones but pretty natural in a pair of speakers in a living room. Today, a large audience is unlikely to listen to music on speakers for the first listen.
