Pursuit of the nuclear family at a societal level destroys community.

In an effort to be less lurker more poster (maybe), a short comment on my PFP:

Why a pepper shaker? I dunno. I found it like that while renovating through deconstruction. One day I hope to be done deconstructing and move on to rebuilding (self and house).

Best metaphor I've heard is that using AI is like bringing a forklift to lift the weights at the gym. The point is to build YOUR muscles, not to make the weights go up and down.
I love to see stuff like this because it helps explain to people trapped in tech-sponsored information bubbles the actually obvious fact that universities teach people to know & think things, and AI is a way to produce the effect of knowing & thinking things w/o actually knowing & thinking them.

People who use AI think that they’re skipping to the success when they’re skipping to the failure. You begin and end your life as someone who has not written the novel, you did not teach yourself to express what was inside of you, you died without making something that no one else could make.

Ok here’s the real problem with AI

When you start parsing what work is unimportant enough for the AI to do and what only you can do, you are making the assumption that you know what parts are “important.” This is unknowable opportunity cost. What discoveries would you have made writing the outline?

Somehow, I wish the conversation would be reframed so anti-immigration people have to explain their core principles. Like: Why must immigration be limited in the first place? What, precisely, would be bad about letting, say, 30 million people from other places into the country? Make them explain.

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

A new report finds the bottom 60% of U.S. households—or *two-thirds* of the population—can't afford a “minimal quality of life": housing, health care, and other necessities.

"Indicators like GDP and unemployment tell us the economy is thriving. But they don’t reflect the reality of most Americans."

A reminder that every small bit of good you do - whether it be putting art into the world, helping a friend or stranger, donating to a good cause, or just listening to someone who needs to vent - offsets all the evil in the world just a little bit. And sometimes that's just what the world needs.

Love this. In his “I Agree” installation Dima Yarovinsky-Yahel took the content from terms of service statements for companies like Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Tinder and printed them out on A4 paper with a standard font size for legal contracts to demonstrate the length of these agreements.

Class consciousness, solidarity and mutual aid are a large part of the way we make it through the rising tide of fascism to do the work of reconstruction 2.0 and defending one another from the damage that is to come and already done.
Plenty of politicians on both sides of the aisle feel threatened by rising class consciousness.
