Recently I noticed my favorite local bookstore is selling a baseball cap that says I WOULD PREFER NOT TO and yes I get the reference and also no I didn’t buy it because I feared it would be too on the nose.

Look bringing back polio sounds bad. But it’s a small price to pay to get rid of pronouns in email signatures and black women in star wars.

If you, like me, were wondering why no one wants to talk to you — @mohusseini.com has it all figured out for us (as per usual).

Folks here from algorithmically-fiddled apps complain of a lack of engagement.

It’s on all of us (to some extent)

“Likes” don’t really do anything here.

When you like someone’s post it just creates a notification TO THEM ONLY that you liked it.

The Container Store filing for bankruptcy is the end times, people. The. End. Times. They are literally all that stands between me and despair.

Just handwrote the entire 1st draft of the 1st act of my novel in under 3.5 weeks. Blown away. I’ve always been better pen to page — much more present, less clever, more real, but I haven’t written longform by hand since high school. Shouldn’t have stopped writing fiction by hand & now I never will.

That’s the whole story. Defunding schools, sending money to charters and homeschool groups and religious schools, growing armies of the ignorant and abandoning everyone else to a starved system. That’s the story of America’s decline.
Most of our problems could be solved by properly funding public education.

The MAGA GOP is a death cult.

— 1M+ dead from COVID
— Pregnant women & girls dying due to barriers to reproductive care
— RFK JR poised to spread disinformation about vaccines, pasteurization, mental health meds
— ACA under attack by Trump, again

The MAGA GOP is a death cult. I said what I said.

Cleaning out the kids’ bookshelves this week. Books I refuse to let go of:

— NEW SOCKS
— All the KNUFFLEBUNNY books
— Every book by Madeline L’Engle stays on my shelves till I’m dead.

The coming administration has really sped up my cranky old lady transformation. I want these people off my White House lawn.

These are not serious people. They have put children in charge of our government - although ironically children understand gender issues what better than these creeps.

This underscores a dark thought I had at the time — that Biden won (thank god) in part because so many Trump voters had died.
While Trump crows about his great COVID record, remember this, from the COVID Crisis Group (a bipartisan collection of scientists and public health experts), in a study published last year.

Hey BlueSky folks… what are your top three favorite scores for film, TV, or games?

I’ll start! These are the three I’m feeling tonight…

- Conan the Barbarian by Basil Poledouris
- Star Trek The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind by John Williams

On really hard days, I set a 100 word goal. 100 words is always doable — always — and most days it turns into hundreds more. (And if it doesn’t — who cares? You hit your 100 word goal.)
If you're struggling with creative work lately, setting bite-sized goals can help.

"Work on WIP" might feel overwhelming.

But "Revise dialogue in chapter 2" or "Add weather details to opening scene?" We can handle that.

What's your One Small Thing for today? Set a 20-minute timer & get started!

This is absolutely fucking insane.
Woke up this morning remembering how, after Kerry's 2004 loss to W, the Democratic party and the press decided it was abortion's fault. When I tell you that this is not an exaggerated memory:

I don’t watch TV “news.” I read the NYT (often angrily), listen to NPR (same) & surf headlines here. If you’re still angry at TV news eons after the fairness doctrine lapsed, I’d suggest you have a mistaken understanding of what “news” means. Turn it off. You’ll be happier & better informed w/o it.

This is greater benefit I am finding to writing the first draft of my book by hand, in a shitty notebook.

(Related: If you haven’t read Natalie Goldberg’s brilliant WRITING DOWN THE BONES — call your local bookstore and order it.)
Being a perfectionist in your writing is the default setting for new writers. We all start that way. But when you’re building a house, you don’t paint it as you go. You lay a foundation, build a structure, put in the wiring & pipes, build the walls and lay the floors, THEN you can think about paint.
