If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.
CFP: A Time of Monsters
The monster has been here all along. It is a historical constant that manifests in wildly different ways across time, place, and culture. Whatever form it takes, the monster claws at categories; it un...

So a Democratic TN legislator just came on stage at this Indigo Girls & Melissa Etheridge concert and somehow failed to remind this large audience there is a special election for Congress happening RIGHT NOW. Can’t say I’m surprised.

the number one thing institutions and funders can do for community archives is just give them money, whether they have a 501(c)3 or not. give them money to do the work they need to do. #SAA25

This is my personal feeling, too. But also told from my higher ups that we *have* to engage with it, which suuucks.
I realy don't think there is any ethical justification for archivist use of AI, given its environmental impact and the affects of climate change on archives. It's a hardline stance but that's where I am.

Really enjoyed hearing about how the National Archives of the United Kingdom partnered with high school students to enhance their engagement with historical documents by using DRET AI and the RICHRAB analysis model #SAA25 Session 103

Gavin Newsom is a genuinely bad person and any admiration you have for him needs to be directed toward actually good people like JB Pritzker or Andy Beshear.

this is why everyone I know isn’t having kids btw
The median cost of putting one child through daycare for 5 years in the U.S. is $43,000. That masks much higher costs in many large cities. It’s nearly $150,000 (almost $30,000 for one year) in Arlington, VA. This is for one kid www.wsj.com/personal-fin...

Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it
AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event
Three years in, one of AI’s enduring impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.

update: 6 months later and guess what happened folks? LOL
what will Vandy do when the fascist leaders decide that the word "belonging" is no longer acceptable? will we have to update all of our belonging statements to something else? the fascists move the goal post and we just keep following orders?

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles.

Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.
