All new Safe Wings volunteers are invited to attend a general orientation presented via Zoom.

You need only attend one session.
As we near the end of the fall migration, we may not offer any more sessions this year. New dates will be set next spring. (February-March 2026)

✨ A Rare Admission! ✨
Some species are surprisingly uncommon in our care—even when they’re common in the wild. The ruffed grouse is one of them. Window collisions are often fatal for these birds, which means we rarely have the chance to help one recover. The last one we admitted was back in 2022!

A new estimate of number of birds killed by cats in Canada was just published: https://ace-eco.org/vol20/iss2/art12/

Congratulations and thank you to all authors including ECCC authors, Elizabeth Gow (co-supervisor of PhD student, Jonathan Chu), Julie Bourque and Christian Roy for this work.

Update: unfortunately we found out that the sweet little chimney swift had suffered critical injuries from a collision and passed away. Received a very nice note from the folks at the Wildbird center, and that they did everything they could, but to no avail.

Sigh.

Update: dropped the little guy off at the Wildbird centre and fingers crossed.

We’re not sure what caused little guy to be unhappy as most of the back wall of our landlord‘s building is not window so we’re not sure if a collision happened. Let’s make better buildings that are safer for birds.

Have you ever seen something so cute?! Please do NOT feed or give water to baby birds as good intentions can turn lethal with nestlings choking on food or drowning from water not properly administered.
