Items where the US lacks easy short-term substitutes:

- refineries buying Cdn crude oil
- utilities buying peak Cdn hydro power

Spare a thought for US consumers of gasoline and power today… 🤦

Is it even a climate summit if "the most coherent defence of the COP process [isn't] coming from ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods"? 🫣 energymixweekender.substack.com/p/oil-and-ga...
‘Oil and Gas is a Gift from God’: How Does COP29 Come Back from That?
Even with a lukewarm result, the 2015 Paris climate conference inspired such hope and momentum. Now the COP has been taken over by petrostates. How did we get here, and what do we do now?

Follow my awesome colleagues at the law school!
Substacks are cool, sure, but before them there were blogs! In ~ 2008, the wildly prescient @jenniferkoshan.bsky.social & @jwatsonhamilton.bsky.social launched what has become a singular phenom in law school blogs: @ablawg.bsky.social!

Give it a follow for breaking analysis on all things #CanLaw!

One thing I learned researching my book is that China's climate legislation requires there to be climate-change courses in secondary and undergraduate education.

It also institutes and funds departments of climate change and "ecological civilization" studies in all Chinese universities.
I want to pause here and acknowledge the colossal and accelerating contribution that Chinese researchers are making in the fields of climate and sustainability. This is chronically overlooked in the Anglosphere. Easily half of the most significant papers I've read recently were by Chinese authors.
"We show that 31–67% and 51–91% of the planetary boundary breaching responsibility could be attributed to the global top 10% and top 20% of consumers, respectively."

Any economic agenda, even the "abundance" agenda, must deal with this scientific finding, no?

Unsurprising. This will continue to drive energy nationalism in the U.S. wrapped in the cloak of energy independence.
