Important work by @johnspringford.bsky.social surveying what is known about economic impacts of Brexit

There's room for reasonable people to debate the magnitudes & mechanisms, but the key lesson is clear ...

Mainstream economists were right that Brexit would reduce UK trade & harm the UK economy
Chart-heavy thread incoming. This is an attempt to survey the research to answer the question - were the forecasts predicting a lot of Brexit damage correct? 1/n.
The Constitution Society and Federal Trust asked me to do a survey of the evidence on the economics of Brexit, nine years on from the vote.
Hopefully it's a helpful reference. Short answer: the consensus was right - a large hit to GDP, trade and investment.

Yet more scaremongering in the Telegraph, so it's worth quoting one of the few named experts in the piece, Simon Gallagher:

What a chart. The Iran nuclear deal Trump I tore up was working perfectly - Iran was not enriching in that era.

Now, Trump is dancing on the edge of a volcano in the hopes of getting precisely that kind of deal back.

This is a a fantastic add hilarious thread. Both funny but also loads of ideas for *Very Scary* things.
My manifesto for a better Doctor Who:

1) More monsters that make ordinary but unexplained things, like the gurgling of pipes, where white goods left in a busy area overnight go, scary
2) Frank Cottrell Boyce to write a story every year
3) The companion should live on a housing estate
4) Shipping!
I’ve stolen this for someone (maybe even you?) but the contrast between his first go being centered around the Powell Estate & this one being round a giant revolving tower that fires lasers is stark

What a fascinating thread
Tints in silent films could be literal (red for fire) or symbolic (rose for romance). Thanks to some rather overbuttered Kodak marketing materials for pre-tinted films, here are the tints and what they could mean!

Rose was nearly always symbolic, used for romance and romantic settings.

Ben Franklin on inoculation, after his son died from smallpox.
