It’s easy to say all the things that you wouldn’t do. But can you tell me the things you WOULD do if you were running the country?

- A 100,000 drop in net migration costs us £7bn
- Scrapping the two-child benefit cap costs us £3bn

What gets more attention?

James O’Brien says 'we have become a ludicrous country'.

Nigel Farage has spent £1m taking out adverts in the papers to distract from the Nathan Gill Russian bribe scandal.

We can't let him buy himself out of this. We need an investigation into Russian influence in our politics.

I was baffled by this. Surely listening to MPs who represent the actual population of the country is “country first” and pandering to the right wing press to try to get re-elected is “party second.”

Now to see the same path walked on immigration.
"Is this budget actually just what your MPs want (bad)" I ask in a parliamentary democracy, with a level of critical analysis only entrusted to the BBC's Political Editor

All the Right Wing apologists are cheering the fall in UK immigration announced today while missing what could be a huge problem - 99% of emigrants are under the age of 35. That’s a big brain drain.

Our conversation is stuck on the far-right -named “Boris wave” while net immigration has actually DROPPED BY EIGHTY PERCENT (80%) since then!!

⬇️work visas DOWN
⬇️student numbers DOWN
⬆️emigration UP
🙄& asylum numbers totally steady cos cruelty won’t stop those with no choice!

Shabana Mahmood's proposal to stop being told to "go back home" is to send people "home". Her proposal to stop black and brown people from feeling like they don't belong, is to bake in to the immigration system that they will never belong.

In 2020 Keir Starmer and Alf Dubs urged the then Conservative Government to restore their commitment to family reunion for child refugees, saying there was a “moral argument” to protect desperately vulnerable young people.

Five years later Dubs condemns Starmer for doing the complete opposite

The basic problem with the temporary refugee status policy - especially one lasting up to 20 years - is it leads to very few removals (based on Denmark's experience) but does significantly worsen integration.

Has the Equalities Minister changed her mind since she said the Supreme Court ruling provided "crystal clear" clarity?

In court last week, she seemed to suggest that the EHRC's guidance – was anything but clear.

What happened and why it matters 🧵👇

Due, in part, to "a maddening failure of communication by No. 10", you may not be at all aware of much of this government activity and legislation.

Ownership of the Press and who's controlling media output (🅱🅱🅲 🙄) should become an urgent matter for government.

Can we also talk about male dancers on Strictly Come Dancing being objectified in a way that no-one would consider talking about the female dancers on mainstream TV?
We need to talk about cis het women (especially on a hen do) sexualy assaulting/harassing others.

This is a cultural problem that's never spoken about. It must be spoken about. It's not okay for a woman to grab the bum of a man who has no connection to your party.

How would anyone manage to live in a country for five years without paying a penny in tax?
Here Lam explicitly sets out her proposal - which is official Conservative Party policy - to deport long-standing legal permanent residents who have *ever* claimed any benefit, including the state pension or child benefit (even if the child is British), or who earn less than £39K.

Brilliant thread.

If you can’t see the connection between the demonisation of trans people and the demonisation of refugees, you’re not paying attention.
It's complicated. As i see it, they have a goal that is bigger than 'get rid of trans people' - that's just a tool at their disposal - and multiple routes to that goal. They have the brute force thing you mention, which hasn't worked, but they know that it will play into the...

Feel like some of the apparent panic from the EHRC would be because they know the only way to push through the trans segregation is by force and not to look into it with due care so the minister seemingly not brute forcing throws their whole scheme off

Brute forcing it through is the british transphobes' doing.

Enabling the brute force action because it supports the wider ploy to remove Human Rights protections as the secondary action, is someone else's doing.

Deacon used the analogy of shoplifting. If you really want to use that analogy it would be more realistic to say that making it safer and simpler to seek asylum is akin to tackling deprivation and ensuring people can afford what they need to survive without being forced to resort to shoplifting. 5/

I'd take more pleasure from the Tory Party's fairly obvious death if the trade-off wasn't most of their voters having switched allegiance to an even further right party, led by a racist snake oil salesman who appears to be being promoted at every opportunity by most of the UK press / media.

Whilst you’re all busy getting irate about immigration Nigel Farage is buying houses illegally (almost definitely) and avoiding talking about his Russian asset colleagues. It’s gold star distraction.

Farage boats only account for 4% of migrants.

This is one of the most remarkable things about the present situation in the UK which can be hard for outsiders to realise, since after all one learns from the media. There's a *massive* disconnect between the huge focus and energy it generates in the media and the disinterest of the broader public.
cannot overstate the degree to which like, no normal person in the uk cares strongly about trans people either way btw. like, the reason the media manufactured moral panic is working is because it has convinced lawmakers that people care about it, not because it has made people care about it

The transformation in the characterisation of the political left—from being ridiculed as 🌈 crybaby snowflakes to being portrayed as dangerous, radical, leftist, violent murderers—warrants thorough investigation.

The phenomenon of projection warrants careful analysis.
