“There’s the thing, for all you know it’s time to let go” - Books (SF) & music (prog & classical). Opera lover. Above all: Van Der Graaf Generator & Peter Hammill. Not here for religion or politics.
#NowPlaying Jackie Leven - Defending Ancient Springs (2000). Picked up from a bargain bin. Unknown to me, but interesting folk based music. Wiki tells me he released almost 40 albums. Anyone can tell me what’s best next?

#NowPlaying Ute Lemper - Three Classic Albums (1988, 1993, 1996). Her incomparable take on Kurt Weill and Berlin cabaret songs.

#NowPlaying Manfred Mann’s Earth Band - The Good Earth (1974). I wonder how many people have registered, trying to own their one square foot of earth in Wales.

#NowPlaying The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next… (1973). Energetic.

#NowPlaying Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender (2004). An acquired taste, but very intriguing.

Starting this week by #NowPlaying Affinity’s eponymous album from 1970. Produced by John Anthony, engineered by Robin Cable - familiar names for VDGG recordings. Mo Foster on bass and Linda Hoyle on vocals. Great stuff. Reissue with extras.

#NowPlaying The Kinks - Everybody’s in Showbiz (1972). Classic, superb songs. Journey back in time to my teenage years. Nostalgia galore.

#NowPlaying Curved Air - Live (1975). Powerful renditions of their music, with an extraordinary enthousiastic Sonja Kristina.

#Typos #Proofreading #Books
Am I the only one to notice a decline in the world of book publishing? Frequent typos, editing errors (halfway changed ways of phrasing, leaving a mix of both), American spelling in British editions, etc. Not the end of the world, but goodbye to thoroughness and quality.

#Jazz I am cautiously tipping my toe in jazz music, and seriously afraid of disappearing into a rabbit hole. I know some Miles Davis (Blue & Bitches), Coltrane (Love Supreme), Charlie Parker, but that’s about it. What are must have records? FYI: I love VDGG, Soft Machine, KC, Zappa, Joni Mitchell.

#NowPlaying Epidaurus - Earthly Paradise (1977). A little forgotten gem of keyboard driven symphonic prog from Germany.

#NowPlaying Big Big Train - The Second Brightest Star (2017). A bit neglected and underrated album after the quartet of English Electric 1 & 2, Folklore, and Grimspound. The new tracks are very relaxed and pastoral, while the extended “full” versions of London Plane and Brooklands do them justice.

#NowPlaying A Tribute to Joni Mitchell (2007). Various artists having a go at a variety of her songs. No imitations, but interpretations.

#NowPlaying Nirvana - The Story of Simon Simopath (1967). My cd copy had both the original stereo and mono versions, plus four bonus tracks. Very pleasing psychedelic songs.

Latest remastered song from the upcoming Peter Hammill box is the tremendous 'Tapeworm' from In Camera. A PH track that genuinely rocks - just listen to Guy Evans' drums! www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_d8...
Peter's take: "the narrator is desperately unreliable..." www.facebook.com/share/r/1DwS...

#NowPlaying ABWH - An Evening of Yes Music Plus (1993). One of the weirdest “Yes” albums in my collection. The renditions of the songs is more than OK, but one hardly hears the bass (Jeff Berlin) and Bill Bruford’s electronic drums really don’t go well with the classic material.

#NowPlaying Charity shop acquisition at 1€. So, couldn’t resist, but don’t know what to expect at all. Scarlett Johansson interpreting Tom Waits songs. Anywhere I Lay My Head (2008).
