My book Democracy Under Strain is finally out, and I couldn’t be happier. 🥳 It’s been a long, challenging journey—but one that’s shaped me deeply as an academic. Here’s what it’s about 🧵 #DemocracyUnderStrain (1/11)
Ha! I see your point now. And I agree that would be a good empirical question. Would be worth checking if some of the usual surveys in Spain are being fielded at the moment.
That’s what makes this a good empirical question.

Is positional accommodation still just about immigration, or are other ‘second dimension’ issues spilling over too? and - if so - does accommodation work? I don’t know the answer but I suspect, based on case of immigration, that it doesn’t.

Perhaps. But perhaps not. I would agree if there was evidence of factions within conservative parties across EUP over climate change issues. But I,m not sure if that´s the case. The position of Spain´s PP seems motivated by a domestic agenda, i.e. negotiations with VOX to hold Valencia regional gov.
I get that much of the research on mainstream parties’ positional accommodation of far-right challengers tends to focus on immigration since that is the issue where they have the strongest ownership, but perhaps climate-sceptical turns needs more attention.
‼️ÚLTIMA HORA | El PP se alía en Europa con la ultraderecha a favor del negacionismo climático

Fully agree with this observation. It is quite an interesting question to examine in detail what is driving this surge across this particular group. Some claims - housing, econ security…- are logical but thet existed already when I was young (2000) and support for radical-right was unthinkable.
We need to study the turn in public support for VOX (plurality pref. among spanish young) from normal to something ‘cool’ & ‘edgy’. Support for VOX is worn, often *literally* on wrists, as a badge of honour that signals, like a Michael Kors watch, as a symbol of being part of the trendy club

I love this type of work. I have great admiration for the "classics" of modern polisci as they did a lot with limited data. Articles like this one, however, are extremely useful to really consolidate the relevance, or irrelevance, of their findings! Straight to my Comparative Politics Syllabus.

What does it mean for democracy when governments have to accept externally imposed policies?

A new book by @rubenruizrufino.bsky.social shows how democracy can come under strain when supranational institutions and national governments fail to work collaboratively. blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...
Democracies under strain – the political effects of financial bailouts
The Eurozone crisis shows that governments often have no choice but to accept externally imposed policies, despite their unpopularity.

Very grateful to @lseeuroppblog.bsky.social for their interest my book #DemocracyUnderStrain. The entry also considers contexts beyond the 2010 sovereign debt crisis. What if military assitance from NATO came with political conditionalities? More here blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...

Do citizens have the capabilities required for democracy? The standard story is that empirical research debunks normative democratic theory. With @ethanvporter.bsky.social, we argue for a better framework and show empirical research supports citizen capacities. Forthcoming in @bjpols.bsky.social

Very proud of this new publication. My fantastic co-author, Lea Heyne, and I look at how the management of the COVID19 economic shock affected attitudes towards democracy in the same group of countries that had experienced the 2010 sovereign debt crisis. And we found good news! #DemocracyUnderStrain
