volunteered to help with the local bike-to-school ride this morning, then took the long way to work. the kids were so full of energy! what a delightful way to start the day.

Happy 22nd Birthday CSS Zen Garden!

In May 2003 the Canadian web designer Dave Shea launched a community gallery of websites called CSS Zen Garden.

This speaks to one of my big issues with how higher ed is being discussed right now. Humanities departments are largely service departments. It is not nearly as costly to run a history department as it is, say, an astrophysics lab and yet people insist it is entirely reasonable to cut the former.
Trying to explain that Chinese people do not want to buy Ford F-150s, but do want to pay a huge premium to consume higher education in the US. We are mostly a service economy, and Trump is trashing those services.

it's really funny to think about things getting really good in about 120 years from today. an entire earth full of people you will never meet or know, having a great time here in your old house, in your old yard, drinking the same water you did. but happy

when did they stop letting elementary school kids climb a rope to the ceiling of their school's gymnasium?

Probably bad that the only way to be happy is to not pay attention

I'm very concerned that the media is really underselling the impact of what's happening with higher ed and scientific research grants. Too many of the stories I'm seeing, at least in mainstream media, are presenting this as more of an abstract issue and not outlining the clear consequences.

I'm on my university's tenure and promotion committee, and I spent half the day yesterday discussing the cases of scholars whose brilliant, groundbreaking, and life-saving work was made possible by federal research grants. And it's devastating to think of how much knowledge we'll lose going forward.
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

I liked TikTok because I got to be who I really am in my heart: a creepy little lurker who watches everything and says little.

Biking or walking are my favorite ways to experience and be connected to my town. I chat with neighbors, say hi to dogs, notice a new house under construction or being renovated, peek into a new restaurant to see if I like the menu. I feel part of my community.

When I drive, none of that happens.
Driving everywhere disconnects us from the real, physical world

I often visit with local oak and beech and maple trees. I also notice the birds and bugs and squirrels and deer who come by

Most humans who drive everywhere miss out on this world, shifting among mainly private interiors
