I wrote today’s Guardian Long Read: an account of the awful sinking of the #ScandiesRose on the first day of 2020, with the loss of five men. www.theguardian.com/news/2025/oc...

Guess I should have known when it asked me if I identified as a cisgender woman. No, love. Just a woman, that’s plenty enough.

This is horrific. I doubt they’d let me in either. Bye bye America for a while.

This is a great piece on why we are not seeing oiled birds off Grimsby. Nice to see follow-up after all the disaster writing.

Glad the crews are safe. But not glad at what sea life is now suffering.

FWIW the vast majority of shipping accidents are caused by human error. My money is on an unattended bridge. Nothing much else makes sense with all the tech on offer. But eyes are as useful as tech.

Hello, I’m dining on my own. I’d like you to ask me several times if I’m on my own please, then seat me on the table nearest the toilets, then ostentatiously remove the second set of cutlery while asking me again if I’m on my own. Otherwise it just wouldn’t be right.

Happy #WorldToiletDay! Billions of people have no toilet or an awful toilet, so consider yours and how lucky you are to have a clean and private and safe one and give it a metaphorical hug. Or an actual hug: I don’t mind. #hugyourtoiletday
