A reminder that in 2022, President Biden signed the “Eliminating Limits to Justice for Child Sex Abuse Victims Act,” eliminating the statute of limitations to file civil action for federal sex offenses. Seems relevant.

So disappointed that the "14 charged in Mafia backed betting scandal" article on ESPN did not include a slew of colorful nicknames. Come on, give me a reason to read the article. Where's Vinnie the Brick?

Zatoichi Goes To The Fire Festival (1970, d. Misumi) Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman finds himself at odds with a blind warlord who is overtaxing his people. I’d retitle this Zatoichi Goes To The Bathhouse, as I remember nothing about a fire festival but damn that bathhouse scene was entertaining.

I have a lot in common with many attractive people here, including the fact that I’m not that interested in sex with me either.

Repugnant words from Megyn K; not surprised, are ya?
"don't worry, he's just into 15-year-olds" perhaps not as exculpatory as you think
Also 15-year-olds are not "barely legal." They are minors.
Megyn Kelly: "I know somebody very close to this case…Jeffrey Epstein, in this person's view, was not a pedophile…He was into the barely legal type, like he liked 15 year old girls…He wasn't into like 8 year olds…There's a difference between a 15 year old and a 5 year old."

Harakiri (1962, d. Kobayashi) Great film by Kobayashi about a man (Tatsuya Nakadai) who demands a true samurai ending, a hara-kiri. The residents suspect it’s a scam, as so many have been showing up demanding hara-kiri then getting paid off and leaving.

President Trump criticises France and others for celebrating remembrance day, saying, "We're the one that won the wars"

Surreal, and so very disrespectful to every person who fought in the wars for the freedoms we all enjoy today

The Blue Gardenia (1953, d. Lang) Based on a story by Vera Caspary, who wrote Laura, good noir until it hits the pasted on happy ending. Raymond Burr gets Anne Baxter drunk, tries to rape her but she fights him off, wakes on his floor and runs.

A History of Violence (2005, d. Cronenberg) Viggo Mortensen is excellent as Tom Stall, a diner owner/husband in a near perfect family until there is an attempted armed robbery in his diner and he kills the robbers. He is hailed as a hero but not by the gangsters who recognize his photo

Shadow Kill (2002, d. Gopalakrishnan) Holy fuck, what a great film. A hangman who feels guilty, because he has discovered that a previous man he killed was innocent, is told that his next victim is also innocent, but that’s what happens when you’re poor.

On my rewatch of Slow Horses, I continue to marvel at how even the best spies on the show have fucked up in major ways (including Lamb and Taverner). What's weird is how they determined that anyone could deserve to be labeled a Slow Horse.

Heart of Glass (1976, d. Herzog) Gloriously shot story of a village trying to recreate the ruby glass that was their town’s lifeblood until its maker died, its superstitions and madness and town seer, is also a look at the descent of the human race. Great work from Herzog and his hypnotized cast.
