Student and sometimes practitioner of housing and education policy. Represent Ward 5 on the DC State Board of Education (personal account)
Pinned
Ok, I admit that I forgot about this platform for over a year, but now that the party is really starting, I hope I can reconnect with the good people I met in the bad place.

DC (especially Ward 5), housing and education policy, historians (especially modern US), Hoya and Pirates fans, find me!
Yet more evidence on the importance of HVAC and indoor air quality on student outcomes.

Proud of SBOE Student Rep. Anna Mayer for her leadership in bringing attention to this issue in DC.

If you want to know if a study provides valid evidence of whether a policy or practice has a causal impact on outcomes, look for:

1) a control or comparison group
2) control for pretest
3) independent outcome measures

#EduSky #EdResearch
Expectations about effect sizes are a key challenge to bridging the #EdResearch and policy / practice communities.

Many educators read Visible Learning and believe that 0.4 SD being the "hinge point" - a marker of some practice being worth doing. But that's very misleading 1/2

Well said, Victoria Chen.

Care about student attendance and outcomes? Care about HVAC.
First new working paper thread on Blue Sky! 🧵

In this study, Moontae Hwang, Marzuka Ahmad Radia, and I look at the impacts of school building HVAC system conditions on student outcomes in New York State . . .

I always read and recommend Dr. Wolf, even when it is deeply depressing.
I read the education chapter of Project 2025 so you don't have to. The losers are public education, students of color, student loans, history, and education research. The winners are the wealthy, private schools, overzealous parents, and crackpot law schools. betsyjwolf.substack.com/p/i-read-the...

At school, my 4th grader got to choose a word to describe himself. He picked “nerdy,” which he defined as “very good at something.”
