Classicist / Ancient Greek Linguistics. Existentially disorientated.
Researching for a thesis and putting the damn thing into words are two completely different aesthetic experiences: one relates to the thrill of discovery and the joy of reading; the other, to the struggle of articulation and the exhausting chase for coherence.

The bust of Sir Winston Churchill sits in Trump's Oval Office. He was an immensely brave leader who visited Washington, dressed in fatigues, seeking support against a despot. We all know what he would have made of today's unedifying spectacle and whose side he would have been on.

A Christmas gift from me to my fellow word nerds:

Nine Christmas-related words with interesting etymologies, one for each of the nine letters of 'Christmas'!

It was written with much linguistic love in an armchair beside a roaring fire.

The modern man thinks that everything ought to be done for the sake of something else, and never for its own sake.

The point of learning Latin is that it makes it easier to learn Greek, which makes it easier to learn Hittite, which really helps with your Akkadian, in turn does wonders for your Middle Egyptian.

The Greeks absolutely had it right when they included a chorus in their plays. They knew audiences are dumbasses who need to be told “THIS MAN IS BAD. HE IS HERE AS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT *NOT* TO DO. WOE TO THE BUMPTIOUS FOOL WHO WOULD IDOLIZE HIM. YOU ARE NOT, NOR DO YOU WANT TO BE, ALEX DELARGE”

During Covid lockdown, if you had family round on Christmas Day the police could force their way into your home and make them return to their own homes.
Does anybody know if this service is still available and, if so, do you have to book it?

i think people freak the fuck out about computers because baseline literacy is genuinely declining and this compounds badly with tech literacy at a time when nobody feels like they have any control over anything else going on.

online is bad for you, basically.

I’ve learned over time that whether it’s professional, financial or relationship advice —context matters. What worked well for one person would be self sabotage in a different situation.

There are no best practices only practices that work best in this situation.
