I was struck by a comment made by Wernher Brucks of the City of Zürich's Safe Mobility Office. He says that the goal is to give the "pedestrians ownership of the streets".

Crossing this intersection brings that idea to mind.

A function of design also a function of legal rights and regulations.

Induced demand applies to parking, too:

"An increase in parking provision from 0.1 to 0.5 parking space per person was associated with an increase in automobile mode share of roughly 30 percentage points."

The destruction of the LA's predominantly black Sugar Hill neighborhood by a freeway, poignantly told in the wonderful TV series "Lessons in Chemistry". Sugar Hill at the time of its demise was the most prestigious black neighborhood in LA. Labeled as blighted to push thru the freeway.
