Much of the "is AI art?" questions are really "is AI communication?" but in disguise. AI can make art because a urinal factory can make art. If AI makes art, it's through designation, not intent. AI is a one-sided simulation of communication processed exclusively by the viewer. There's no exchange.

It has snowed in DC (lightly, but definitely snow) before it snowed in Maine. What a world.

There are currently only 22 films streaming on Netflix made before 1980 and not a single one made before 1960, with the oldest film on the platform currently being PSYCHO. I know I’m a broken record but: buy physical media, support your local library, etc etc

The "purchase of the Maine newspapers represent an attempt to preserve existing local news outlets that cover local stories and public figures across the political spectrum. The Leo-backed Maine Wire is a smaller-scale, much more overtly political effort to put a conservative spin on local news"
Media’s political divide plays out in Maine
Local media in the state of Maine has emerged as an unlikely and asymmetric battlefield for big American political money.

I saw the Blue Super Moon. The only thing cooler was being able to see Saturn (and it’s rings!) with my birding scope. Not a bad night for looking up.

Spanish FA president grabbed a player’s head and forcibly kissed her without consent during the WWC medal ceremony.

Now, the fed is SUING *the player* instead of firing him. Women footballers and the women’s game deserve far better than creeps like Rubiales and the Spanish FA protecting him.
Spanish Soccer Federation Says It Will Sue Over Player’s Account of Kiss
The group said it was defending the honor of its president, Luis Rubiales, who kissed the player, Jennifer Hermoso. Players have vowed not to take the field until he resigns.

FilmSky: I wanted to see “Lamb” (Valdimar Jóhannsson, ‘21) when it came out but I missed it and only got around to watching it today. I’ve been saying for years, and will continue to say, it’s a crime that Noomi Rapace isn’t a Hollywood megastar. 📽️

It’s #LetterboxdFriday! This week I learned that Max has a ton of Méliès shorts. I love watching stuff like “Un homme de têtes” and imagining turn-of-the-century filmgoers getting the vapors or whatever.

Also, Midsommar rewatch prompted by @youaregood.bsky.social, which you should all listen to. 📽️

Watched 2001: A Space Odyssey a for the first time today, in bright daylight on a small screen while home sick.

I think that was the wrong way to do a first viewing because man did I want to fast forward a lot. 📽️

Watched Akira last night for the first time (embarrassing) and still thinking about it. I came for motorcycles and dystopian future, and stayed for the completely unexpected body horror. What a film. 📽️

I finished FF16 and felt the same way I always do at the end of a Final Fantasy: Mildly confused and also annoyed that it was a sad ending.

Owl Day? Don't mind if I do. Great Horned Owl chick, with mama behind, making the chick look very, very muppet-y. Followed by a Snowy Owl on the prowl.
