My dissertation was inexpensive, and I was asked in every interview why I didn't get a big grant to fund it (I got funding when I needed it).
A weird thing about scientific research in academia is that you are less valued if you can do your science on the cheap. Ultimately what most universities care about is how much you spend, bc that is how they get overhead. Total dollars brought in is the metric that seems to matter

In 2001 we ran the FHL Fish Biomechanics course. The same one that will run this coming summer. Here, students and professors are collecting fish for projects. Of the 15 people 10 were or became @biologists.bsky.social JEB authors. What a wonderful group.
