"Junshang! You don't have to carry them around with you all day." Tianlang-jun waved off his nephew's attempts at taking the eggs bundled snuggly at his chest. "Of course I do." "I don't want to trouble junshang–" "What trouble?" Tianlang-jun interjected. He stroked a clawed finger gingerly on each yellow egg in turn. "My nephew returns from the dead and blesses me with grandchildren, why would I not keep them close?" Zhuzhi-lang's shoulders jumped. "They're not..." "Grandchildren (italicized)," Tianlang-jun said with finality. Zhuzhi-lang bowed his head in defeat. Quiet settled between them for a stretch, Zhuzhi-lang standing at Tianlang-jun's side, same as he once did each day, Tianlang-jun rocking the eggs. He carried fondness in his eyes, the curve of his lips. Zhuzhi-lang unfurled his fingers, let himself relax, the guilt and concern washing away by some degree. He had not seen Tianlang-jun so genuinely happy since that terrible day. Initially he worried about starting a family, that the news of children might dredge up bad memories. But Tianlang-jun was overjoyed, congratulating them—much to Zhuzhi-lang's acute embarrassment—on a job well done. Whenever Zhuzhi-lang stepped away for a moment he would find Tianlang-jun sat by the nest, telling them stories of their family or insisting they hurry along so their impatient grandfather can meet them. At all times he would touch them, light, careful, but constant. If Zhuzhi-lang needed to leave the house for supplies, he returned to see Tianlang-jun and his makeshift sling, carrying the children with him everywhere, like today. Zhuzhi-lang had felt a pang in his heart when he understood why — it was as though Tianlang-jun feared they might disappear at any moment, lost to him. Like so many people in his life had before. Like he believed Zhuzhi-lang had been. Zhuzhi-lang relented on retrieving the children from Tianlang-jun. He knelt on he floor, listening as Tianlang-jun regaled the little eggs with the story of their dashing grandfather and the woman he loved. (Adding one or two minor embellishments.)
