The reason I get frustrated with hiring managers who say it's so hard to find & hire diverse candidates:

I've been a hiring manager at four different tech companies and at every one I recruited and hired Black engineers at every level, from SE1 to EM! And women into Senior+ roles at 3 of them! 1/4

Can someone explain to me what the fascination with Tupac is? Maybe I'm missing something, but he was an actor pretending to be about "that life."

Yes, absolutely. This is a huge problem with any bad encryption. People may take risks they wouldn’t with an unencrypted channel.

Correct - there’s two things at play here
- advertisers don’t want controversial content near their ads. Brand safety teams exist.
- ads revenue based models lead to deprioritizing resources to things that are not demonstrating revenue growth (eg safety) bc value is measured by engagement
In fact as we learned from Twitter, it’s often the advertisers who are pushing the platforms to clean up their act. It just so happened that in the case of Twitter, Elon cares more about “free speech” than ad revenue.

Let's do a "Hire Me" thread!

If you are underrepresented + looking for a new role in tech, reply with your details!

Introduce yourself, tell us the role you are looking for, link to your website/LinkedIn and where people can reach you. I will repost

Lack of of choice over my own experience is one of the reasons I've never been a fan of social media, but Bluesky is winning me over by the day.
The What's Hot feed is just one example of what's possible with custom algorithms — soon, you'll be able to choose the algorithms that power your own feeds.

Your attention is an invaluable resource. We want a future where you control what you see on social media.

👋 We're changing up the What's Hot feed!

We've decided to not show some types of content in the feed (e.g. sexually explicit images). This content is allowed on the app, but since What's Hot has become the landing point for all of our new users, we're updating this simple placeholder algorithm.

I love talking about Bluesky but what I look forward to most is when we start talking about tech again in the fun way- not griftery things but the genuine discussions about tech that some nerds like me still find exciting

There are organized efforts at disruption underway. I reported my observations yesterday.

I encourage you to consider reporting this to the Bluesky team:

1. Sit down and really think about what your non-negotiables/boundaries are. Know your “why”

2. Be strategic about the seat. Could be very local or higher up, but consider the politics and the commitment (not all are full-time!).

It’s interesting how product decisions shape the user base of a product. Mastodon is a pain in the ass to use so it attracts people who think dealing with inconvenience is a virtue. Sort of like Linux on the desktop.

This is in stark contrast to Bluesky.
