Fascinating how similar arguments against #EvidenceBased practices are across borders. ⏱️ to move beyond philosophical, ideological, opinion-based dichotomies. #Equity may be possible if we are actually informed by how humans learn. #bced

From the Cariboo to Cowichan to White Rock - headed home after 2 days of PD about equity & literacy. Grateful to folks from SD79 & SD36 for the invite, hosting & participating. Flight delay = time to polish course outlines for the new Regional TEP cohort @unbced.

Notes from the diary of a PD provider: When you travel to Van Island to provide PD, & realize you forgot your toiletries after you get to White Rock for your next event, this is what $21 at a local store buys. Must be the “vintage” toothpaste. Don’t think I’ve seen cinnamon Close Up since 1989.

“If I had one wish: It would be that all the reading influencers in the world would join hands and sing together in the spirt of science and sanity about the necessity of centering foundational skills instruction on facilitating orthographic mapping.”

As we begin to introduce universal screening using evidence-based measures across #BCED, it is so important to understand that screening is just the start. Dr. Timothy Odegard explains this, and so much more, in this excellent article.

Ep. 43 is a “must listen.” Being literate (& numerate) is good for kids, society & the economy. It’s not about “getting back to basics,” swinging pendulums, politics, philosophies, or ideologies. It’s about #evidence & access to education.

More food for thought from Dr. Charles Ungerleider. To his point about mastery of knowledge, there must be access to it. Ensuring that there is a bridge to the large body of research related to learning and literacy in all levels of teacher ed, a s key.

This brings forward food for thought re: #teacherautonomy, what it means to be in a “profession” & our responsibility as “professionals.” Professional judgement is so important, which is why #evidence is crucial to the knowledge that we base our judgments upon.
