Hey @senbillferg.bsky.social. We need to pass HB1222.

287(g) agreements make MD unsafe, especially in light of ICE's abuses. 287g costs Marylanders money (just ask Nashville) & studies show they lead to racial profiling & loss of community trust. We need less enmeshment w ICE, not more.

This is a good reminder that anytime you try to find some kind of 4D chess reason for what Musk does, the reality is much likelier that he is a complete idiot who has no idea how the world works, yet he is powerful and rich and wields near complete loyalty from others so he gets what he wants.
In this piece I highlight just one example of one of the main (anonymous!) accounts that Elon is taking instructions from, claiming that Bill Kristol is funded by USAID... based on a total misunderstanding of what a *donor approved fund* is.

There are so many examples like this.

A lot of these same people thought DACA was an unconstitutional extension of executive authority.

Although I rate the threat to Birthright Citizenship as fairly low, I think it's worth taking note of this:

In Trump I, he talked (endlessly) about this but never actually tried to do it. In Trump II he did it.

Same for revoking the "sensitive locations" policy.

The shackles are off.

The most powerful words you can say right now to these fascist bastards is:

"No, make me."

They cannot actually be everywhere and enforce their fascist policies. They rely on fear to do the job of governing for them. By refusing to comply, you make their means of compliance ineffective.

Dems are acting like Dooms Day begins Monday. It’s already begun.

So disappointed at some of the Dem yeas here, who are signing onto *expanding* a bill that will lead to racial profiling, unfounded arrests, and will flood detention centers.

Dems have given up already, and we are -5 days in.
70 senators voted to expand mandatory detention in the Laken Riley Act to include the overused charge of assaulting a police officer, which prosecutors use with flimsy evidence to extend sentences and gain leverage. www.senate.gov/legislative/...

Laken Riley Act passes the House. With 48 Dem votes.

One attention-seeking state AG could sue to demand USCIS stop issuing visas to entire countries or overturn indivudal decisions. Would also require detention for theft-related arrests. Cue Arpaio & his ilk; no convictions necessary.

It begins.
It's gotten ZERO attention (this article doesn't even mention it!) but this law authorizes state AGs like Ken Paxton to seek court orders forcing the executive branch to detain and deport specific people, overturn individual humanitarian parole decisions, and cease issuing visas to entire countries.
The Laken Riley Act passed the House on Tuesday afternoon marking the first piece of legislation out of the GOP-controlled Congress, as Republicans seek to fulfill a campaign promise to crack down on illegal immigration. #politics www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/house/3...

If you are care or are interested in learning more about immigration, you need to be folllowing @austinkocher.bsky.social ‘s Substack. This essay is a must-read. Dr. Kocher’s assessment is spot on: Volatility, hypocrisy, and cruelty are on the horizon.

This post is a longer essay in response to the 2024 election and attempts to lay the groundwork for how to think about the next Trump administration particularly as it relates to immigration.
