I've gone down some interesting rabbit holes researching potential Tampa Bay baseball stadium sites, but I did not expect to be researching WWII German POW camps as part of this beat.

This is simply not true. Many states have scholarships for high-ish achieving in-state students (Bright Futures in FL, Calgrant in CA), and low income students can also receive federal Pell grants.
“Well-funded”, “excellently staffed”, and most importantly “cheap” (to students) being the key parts

Now, most flagship state schools are out of the question for even the top 10% of most public high school grads, especially the ones from poorer districts.

I am thrilled to see that my practice of never buying gifts for anyone is now a form of protest!
This holiday season, we’re saying it loud and clear: We Ain’t Buying It.

For too long, corporations have profited off of us. From Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, we’re taking action with our wallets to demand accountability.

I wrote a thing about the generational cliff Israel is facing in US public opinion and why it's not going away easily (if at all).

If you thought it was interesting, share it, and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Older generations of Americans understood Israel; that may not be the case for the next generation.

This should be disqualifying for a party leader
if you ever say “vote blue no matter who” to me ever again i will punch you in the fucking eye
Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

I lived in Germany during of wave of anti-immigrant sentiment in the 1990s and loved this postcard. I'd love to see someone post what an MLB team's lineup would look like if you eliminated all foreign-born players.

Maybe this shouldn’t bug me given the stakes but it does: this is in the city of Chicago!! I’ve seen so many posts talking about “suburbanites.” Give city folks their due.
its remarkable to see random suburbanites in their fucking PJs have more courage than the vast majority of america's political, social, and civil elites
More from the scene

I realize the architectural integrity of the White House is not the main issue here, but are there no review panels charged with overseeing major demolition of this and other federal buildings? Can the next Speaker decide to install skylights in the Capitol Rotunda?
Scoop: Trump has started demolishing the White House's East Wing facade to build his ballroom. The president had claimed construction of the $250 million building wouldn’t ‘interfere’ with the existing White House structure. /W @ddiamond.bsky.social wapo.st/4hqBNiU

Going to a protest in NYC is great, you get to hang with your friends. Protesting in a small Central Florida or Idaho town? That takes courage.
Take note of all these people turning out for protests in small towns in red states.

Remember them the next time you’re inclined to write an area off because “they voted for this.”

Our uni has stopped investing in everything OTHER THAN AI, and so my one use of AI is writing up the ridiculous vision plans and mission statements explaining how our department aligns with the university’s new cyber-focused strategic plan.
In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

I began writing for @draysbay.bsky.social in 2016, just in time to cover the Rays first search for a new stadium site. Looking forward to my second decade on this beat, where I get to bring together my baseball and urban planning passions. The latest: build a stadium on a community college campus?

in Chicago they are arresting entire buildings of residents and tear gassing, arresting and in 2 cases shooting protesters. We can debate the right word to use but alarm is the appropriate response.
If they show up and stand around- like they've been doing - we'll know that they're wondering what the hell anyone was thinking and we can be fairly confident it's a sign that Trump's ppl are lost. If they're sent to arrest a governor, that's a completely different ballgame.
October 5, 2025 at 2:18 PM
They will just arrest the game day staff and leave the high rollers to get through a 4 hour game with no beer and dirty bathrooms.
It's really going to slow down the entrance gates to the Super Bowl to administer all those loyalty oaths, and then carry off the folks who refuse to pledge loyalty to Dear Leader.

It was always inevitable that Cawthorn would land in Florida.
He was just in the news a couple weeks ago again because he had another warrant issued for his arrest after he missed a court date for yet another driving incident.
