AS IF I snuck this episode of Systems of Harm out yesterday without posting about it - but 90% of the design systems community was at Converge.

This week’s guest is none other than @bradfrost.com (‼️) talking about design systems and ADHD.

Many people still misunderstand screen readers — who uses them, how they work, and what inclusive design really means.

Ela Gorla has unpacked the most common myths on the TetraLogical blog:

And the inaccessibility. We have little to no chance of increasing the diversity of teams and creating access to work opportunities, if we don’t tackle the poor usability and lack of inclusion in pretty much all corporate software

Business leader: Our user persona? Well we don't want to constrain our customer base, this product is for everyone

Designer: That's great! Let's talk about accessibility

Business leader: Oh, I didn't mean it like *that*

It's important to imagine how a disabled person might be able to participate or do something independently/preserve their autonomy.

Privacy & autonomy are often taken away from people with access needs. Baked in assumptions can reinforce this.

How do we preserve autonomy and dignity in design?

Ironic if we are aiming to design inclusive experiences but don't apply this thinking to how we work within our teams, what tools are used.

Could I use this tool keyboard only (no mouse)?

"Could that whiteboarding session have been a document?"
Gatekeeping by assumption: accidental ableism in design :: Content Design Ireland
For years designers have known that what we design should be accessible. But what about how we design it? Shouldn’t that be accessible, too?
