After months of reading, playing, and debating RPGs the 2025 ENNIES nominees are here.

Congrats to this year’s nominees and the countless others who didn’t get nominated but were just as deserving. As always, there were more winners than seats this year.

Ok so since the Discourse (tm) about world building has morphed into a Discourse (tm) about magic systems I'm going to share one of my weirdest essays:

Magic and Lawlessness
I have an almost irrational distaste for "hard" magic systems in literature. This is not because of any particular aversion to stories getting metaphysical. I have absolutely no problem there but it i...

New York is now the world’s newest socialist republic.

And it all stems from years of working class organizing.

This moment doesn’t come without thousands of people spending millions of hours building the capacity for political transformation.

Most modern anarchist theory I read is either (a) rehashing old anarchist ideas in modern language, (b) combining old anarchism with something else eg modern feminism, or (c) some of the worst edgy/pretentious rubbish I've ever read. I really want to find something good that's genuinely new.

Over the moon to finally be reading @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social's "Is a River Alive?"

Feel like I've just sat down and already a hundred pages have disappeared. Temporarily tearing myself away so I can visit my own local river.

When I was nine years old, my family was “baptized in the Holy Spirit.”

That’s what we called it, anyway. One night my parents prayed at their kitchen table with some bookstore owners they'd gotten to know in town, and the next morning—after 20 years of smoking—they quit, cold turkey.

Yes! And I only recently realized is that if you follow this observation, you'll also find no penal substitutionary atonement in Luke's gospel (since Luke-Acts is a composite work)!

e.g. Luke leaves out the saying about Jesus' life as a ransom found in Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45
One of my favorite classes is having students make observations via guided ?s on the gospel speeches in Acts. Here's my final slide I'm priming them for. Altho many r shook, they can't "unsee" what they just observed. I've found this way (*usually*) generates curiosity rather than defensiveness.

Love this framing.

The common idea is that self-denial for Jesus’ disciples is a good end in itself (suggesting that human agency must be eliminated).

God gives us Jesus’ narrow way to liberate us from sin’s grasp (which leads us to a single place - death), for futures of endless possibility.
Good morning, beloved.

In a world with increasingly limited options, liberation is—in part—the ability to choose your own adventure.

Today is a great day to overcome evil with good.
