Here's the story of how Fr. Dominic Legge and Fr. Henry Stephan quietly mentored one of America’s most powerful politicians into Catholicism — and what it reveals about a growing movement of ideologically driven converts whose faith often blossoms in private but manifests explosively in public.
The Dominican Friars Who Guided JD Vance’s Conversion to Catholicism
Two Dominican priors intellectual tutelage, outside the usual parish classes, shaped JD Vance as he became America's most famous and controversial convert.

Do we have to do this ? The use of IQ testing on ppl w ID is bad enough. Trump’s language about “low IQ” is worse. We don’t have to perpetuate this.
A plurality of Americans believe that Trump has a below average IQ. That's obvious. And that was before dementia sinilis set in.

I have … no words…
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

These are the gems in the acknowledgments that I’m here for .
eh, It wasn't that high up... and 4-year-olds can take it. 😜

But if you're looking for other good moments in the paper... I also recommend reading the acknowledgments closely.

Douthat claims to care about humanities so maybe he could write something about how US News and World Reports appears to be vanishing much of humanities research by relying on Elsevier for research metrics which does not include standalone books in their database.

I got the great idea from Elizabeth Wardle at the Howe Writing Center (buy her book on writing, btw) to have my students color during class discussion today. It was amazing! No one was on screens. Everyone was paying attention and we had a great discussion about Freedom of Speech. 10/10 recommend.

You’re think *you’re* depressed? Try being at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association right now with 5,000 political scientists presenting their work on the state of democracy, public opinion, and media.

They are also drinking heavily.

The cited article lost me at the paragraph where it defends looking only at placement in PhD granting institutions. I love my R2 job and refuse to accept that it is "less than".
In poli sci, "the top 20% of departments produced 75% of all faculty and the bottom 50% accounted for less than 5% of all tenure track faculty members at a research university. 49 programs did not have a single graduate placed in a TT position at a PhD-granting department in the past 10 years."
