A brilliant counterpoint to Easy Rider. What if the dreams and victories of the 60s were non-existent to begin with? Also a prescient examination of the modern day police psychosis we see everyday now. boxd.it/8OQy2N
A ★★★★½ review of Cisco Pike (1972)
If Easy Rider was about the perceived assassination of the Hippie Dream in the wake of culture war, post-war anxiety, and emerging neoliberalist economics, this film is about the non-existence of that...

A good little George H.W. Bush-era meditation on American mediocrity and susceptibility to fascist notions. Great fun for Evil Dead, Wes Craven, and Salem’s Lot (1979) fans boxd.it/81THXD
A ★★★★ review of Children of the Night (1991)
One of only three films produced by Fangoria Films (yes, that Fangoria), this picture feels ripped out of the pages of a ‘90s issue of that magazine. It’s fun, hilarious, and loaded with great visuals...

The inhumane machinery of the American justice system and the uniquely American/Puritanical obsession with psychotic AA penance. boxd.it/7XCy9p
A ★★★★ review of Juror #2 (2024)
This is right up there with Clint’s other America Is Rotten films like Unforgiven and Richard Jewell. But it’s an interesting spin that focuses on the cheap and inhumane machinery of the American just...

The only American version of English kitchen sink realism and Italian neo-realism I can think of boxd.it/7Utgvd
A ★★★★½ review of Silkwood (1983)
This is absolutely one of the rare Mike Nichols films I truly love. The camera by Miroslav Ondricek, the performances by Streep, Cher, and Craig T. Nelson, the sparingly used score by Georges Delerue,...

This unsung comedy belongs in conversation with other classic Canadian comedies and also has Sloan and Jean Eustache 🤯 boxd.it/7OjBMv
A ★★★★ review of Childstar (2004)
I love Don McKellar because he simply cannot write a character without some degree of earnest empathy. On the face of this premise you’re thinking it’s going to be great fodder for insufferable Hollyw...

Daniel Day Lewis acted in 21 films in his career.

Only one of them is a comedy starring him and Harry Dean Stanton in which he does frontal nudity twice. boxd.it/75XnPF
Review of ‘Stars & Bars’ (1988) ★★★½
Daniel Day Lewis acted in 21 films in his career. Only one of them is a comedy starring him and Harry Dean Stanton in which he does frontal nudity twice. All in all it’s a pretty solid weirdo…

Dirty jokes, incredible showmanship on acoustic instruments, a Henry Darger-esque porno bible, absolute DRIP, and the most skinny mustaches assembled on screen boxd.it/4UTXk1

This could be a perfect movie if it wasn’t for the absolutely distracting insertion of Cave himself on the film’s soundtrack. A terribly vain choice by a terribly vain man boxd.it/1JUE

After hearing how great this film is supposed to be, you can imagine how disappointed I was to discover that it’s just reactionary conservative goulash that moves at a mucus-like pace boxd.it/4R5BmR

Fascinating and surreal b-picture that seems fixated on the US geopolitical policies of the 60’s & 70’s boxd.it/4QTERf

I don’t care much for slashers but this one was great. A tight 76-minute affair that’s self-aware and purposeful in it’s scenes that are more fixated on the relationships between young ladies. The killer is almost an inconvenient necessity boxd.it/4QG00f

One of my new favorite erotic thrillers/neo-noirs. So good and so unique but ultimately hampered by budget. There is SO much drip in this film. Incredible costuming boxd.it/4QbP91

More good stuff from John Dahl. Tight script and a wonderful Linda Fiorentino performance hampered significantly by a goofy Light Jazz score boxd.it/4OnNan

A delightful and wonderfully crafted noir by John Dahl. Joanne Whaley’s eyes stick to you like static cling and Michael Madsen is in peak form as a maniacal hunk boxd.it/1iMo
