I also constantly heard "don't be so sensitive" and "toughen up" while I was growing up.
If you find your ADHD/autistic loved one hard to empathize with sometimes, bear in mind they've likely experienced a life of daily corrections:
- don't leave that there
- stop fidgeting
- sit down
- be quiet
- walk properly
- be more tidy / calm
- be less forgetful / weird / boring / enthusiastic
