So many good reasons to make the extra effort to shop locally and anywhere but Amazon...
Your Prime Day reminder that Amazon...

-Donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund
-Scrapped plans to display tariff costs after pressure from Trump
-Shelled out $40M for a documentary about Melania Trump

My heart breaks for a) any military member who isn't a straight white guy, and b) our country, which is unnecessarily vulnerable due to the misguided priorities of the Fox hack and orange menace. Ugh.

With the dismantling of the CDC, it's a good time to revisit the geography of the Covid-19 pandemic, which featured dramatic regional gaps in adherence to public health advice, vaccination rates, and resultant deaths.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

I love the idea that every dollar I spend is a little vote for the kind of world in which we live. This makes me shop at small businesses, farmers' markets, arts & music festivals, etc. and talk to the people doing the work.

Thanks for the inspiration & thought exercise, Anna Lappé!

What’s the real difference between the National Guard and active duty troops—and why does it matter in LA? Trump just federalized the California Guard against the governor’s wishes, a rare move not seen since 1965. Here’s what you need to know:

Humans still haven't seen 99.999% of the deep seafloor
Human eyes have only seen a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the areas of the world that are covered by deep water. Scientists want to change how they explore these regions.

Why is it our job to keep kids alive in poor countries?

1) U.S.A.I.D. advances our national interests & our values. Its demolition means that the US loses soft power.

2) We can heal the sick & save children’s lives inexpensively: US spends 0.24 percent of gross national income on humanitarian aid.
Opinion | Musk Said No One Has Died Since Aid Was Cut. That Isn’t True. (Gift Article)
A journey through the front lines of global poverty shows that when the world’s richest men slash aid for the world’s poorest children, the result is sickness, starvation and death.
