Aug 11th was the 52nd anniversary of Cindy Campbell's back-to-school jam, where her big brother DJ Kool Herc looped break beats using a two turntable set up.

In honor of hip hop's birthday, share the song(s) you would start with if you were teaching hip hop 101. (And why??)

“Check the Rhime” by Tribe Called Quest. “Don’t Walk Away” by Jade.
Today is #MusicSermon's EIGTH ANNIVERSARY!!! 🎂🍾

It all started with a thread about how we danced hard AF in the 90s (and we'll revisit that this week), so it's only appropriate that for Week 4 of #BlackMusicSummer, you share the songs that have you put in a whole ass work out on the dancefloor!

Defining this as a monologue could have its detractors, but…https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZyJzylk8d_M&si=VUu7P6DUCOI-vrE1
Thank y'all for being patient!
This week we talking that talk.

Sometimes artists just had to get the words out plain; singing alone wasn't gonna do it. They needed to emphasize the point!

For week 3 of #BlackMusicSummer, share songs where the monologue was the main feature.

Greg Phillinganes’s work on “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough.” Credit is due. “Thinkin Bout You” by frank Ocean.
Let's take it to the bridge!
Songs are getting shorter on average thanks to social and streaming, which means song elements like a good bridge are more rare.

For Week 2 of #BlackMusicSummer, share your favorite songs where the bridge was bridging.
July 15, 2025 at 7:50 AM
“Don’t Go” by En Vogue. “The Beautiful Ones” by Prince (that scream). And don’t know why James Brown’s “Please, Please, Please” doesn’t get more mentions. That’s all the damn song is. How many times does he say it??
Let's get into it: R&B songs used to have vulnerability. They used to have "please baby baby please!" They used to have singers out in extreme weather conditions dressed inappropriately for said conditions.

For Week 1 of #BlackMusicSummer, share the song you think is a great example of Begging R&B

“The Root” and “Send It On” by D’Angelo. “Devotion” by EWF.
All month we’ve celebrated different themes, elements, and aspects of Black music.Today is a little more simple: the song you love in and out, top to bottom.

For the *final day* of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share your idea of the perfect song.
June 30, 2025 at 4:27 PM
“Shakey Dog” by Ghostface. “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” by Stevie. Still tear up at the last phrase.
Music can be so powerful and poignant that it draws you into worlds and realities that aren’t your own.

For Day 29 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song that makes you relate to something you never experienced.
June 29, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Man…too many to list. But here’s one from one of the greatest beats ever made. “Electric Relaxation” by A Tribe Called Quest” and “Mystic Brew” by Ronnie Foster.
"Reverse crate digging" = my term for finding the original source a sample. The best part when you get to the original song, and now THAT'S your jam.

For Day 28, share a sample that made you love the original (post both songs! Also TAG ME in both songs)
June 28, 2025 at 5:27 PM
Marvin Gaye’s entire “Here, My Dear” album.
You ever been minding your business, listening to a song, and have the revelation that the entire song is actually problematic, you just never realized it because it sounds so good?

For Day 27 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song that’s low key trifling or petty.
June 27, 2025 at 8:34 PM
“Paid in Full” Eric B and Rakim. But lemme tell you bout my wife! After a gap of over 40 years, she sang every gd lyric to “Native New Yorker” by Odyssey during lockdown when Tony Touch played it on his livestream from a bridge.
Today we’re going to talk about the songs you know. Like REALLY know. Encoded in your spirit, know. Like if your life was on the line, you could go word for word, note for note, lead and BGV.

For Day 26 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share the song(s) you know every lyric and adlib for.
June 26, 2025 at 4:45 PM
PYT, Can’t Help It, Working Day and Night, Off the Wall, Human Nature, and the break in Thriller and Remember the Time.
I ain't forget! As a Day 25 bonus, share your favorite Michael Joseph Jackson song.
June 26, 2025 at 12:07 PM
More in the spirit of “they should be bigger,” Sy Smith, Donnie, Ka (RIP), Sa-Roc, Foreign Exchange, and Prince Paul.
One of my favorite things about the challenge is discovering new music, and today is officially “put people on” day!

For Day 25 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song from a new or niche artist you think more people should know.
June 25, 2025 at 5:49 PM
Tryna come up with one on par with my two go-to’s, EWF’s “Beijo” and Jill Scott’s “Crown Royal,” but am having trouble. If this were a Hiphop question, it would be something by Pete Rock.
A good appetizer sets a meal off just right. Sometimes the app is even better than the main course. R&B interludes, preludes, and postludes just give a little extra something that feeds our soul.

For Day 24 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a favorite R&B interlude (or prelude or postlude)

Changed it everyday in college. Our crew would basically battle each other without saying so. Here’s one day. Taped it off the vinyl. youtu.be/Y3hndBQrgbw?...

Somebody Else’s Guy and Adore and Aretha’s Amazing Grace album.
Some songs turn us into full vocalists... in our minds. We can do all kinds of runs and hit all kinds of notes... in our minds.
With the right acoustic conditions we could really do this... in our minds!

For day 22 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song that makes you think you can SANG.
June 22, 2025 at 9:46 PM
“Sensuality 1&2” by The Isley Brothers. “Love’s Holiday” by EWF.
Soft and warm... the quiet storm.

Those sacred radio hours that are just pure vibes. Imagine: It's late night, you want to send a message via song, and the DJ is there to be of service.

For Day 21 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share your Quiet Storm dedication 🌩️
June 21, 2025 at 9:22 PM
De La’s “Saturdays,” but I wanna hold up this one…more like nighttime in summer. youtu.be/uURW6QNrslQ?...
June 20, 2025 at 9:59 PM
Besides anything from Stax Records or James Brown, “Straighten It Out” by O.V. Wright and “Release Me” by Johnny Adams.
Even before everybody around the country started poppin' fans and putting their boots on the ground, that good juke joint, well liquor, somebody might get in a tussle the night of payday music always held a special spot.

For Day 18 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a southern soul fave.
June 18, 2025 at 6:27 PM
“Be Ever Wonderful” by EWF.
God is love, so the purest love songs can easily apply to either the divine or the earthly, it just depends on perspective.

For Day 17 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song that could easily be about Jesus OR your boo.
June 17, 2025 at 4:18 PM
Thought it was corny at the time. Now I see its importance in several ways. youtu.be/NEUX-HYRtUA?...
June 16, 2025 at 11:23 PM
“Moonshadow” by Labelle. “Let’s Do It Again” by The Staple Singers. “Can’t Let Go” by Earth Wind and Fire. “Brand New” by Sista.
Singing groups used to be a staple in R&B music. Blends of voices and personalities were plentiful and abundant. Now, they still exist but are far more rare.

For Day 14 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a jam (or two, or three) from your favorite R&B group(s) of any era.
June 14, 2025 at 11:48 PM
“Dark End of the Street” Aretha’s version. “Millie Pulled a Pistol on Santa” by De La Soul (dark, I know). “My Story” by Jean Grae. “If That’s Your Boyfriend” by Meshell Ndegeocello.
Let's talk about storytelling.

Some songs draw you in and give you characters, conflict, or comedy, or drama, in just a few minutes of time, and feel like they'd translate perfectly to a screen.

For Day 13 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song that would make a great movie.
June 13, 2025 at 7:38 PM
Thom Bell: “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind” by the Delfonics and “Betcha By Golly Wow” by The Stylistics. And whoever Rhymefest ghostwrited for.
There are the master songwriters who have been known for hits over decades, and then there are some you feel people haven't acknowledged the greatness of yet - or not enough for you.

For Day 12 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge share music from a songwriter whose pen game you think is underrated.
June 13, 2025 at 1:26 AM
Can’t find the album version anywhere. But this one. Perhaps his entire first two albums. Not enough know. youtu.be/O1iTyo2FZqU?...

“I Got You (I Feel Good)” by James Brown.
Today is about a song you never want to hear again.
Maybe because you've heard it too much. Maybe because something about the track just annoys you.

Whatever the reason behind it, for Day 10 of the #BlackMusicMonthChallenge, share a song you would yeet (hurl, toss, etc) into the sun if you could.
