I liked the show, Breaking Bad, but it always bugged me that his character's nickname was Heisenberg. He was a chemist and the show featured the Periodic Table prominently, so they really should have called him Pauli or Pauling or, uhhh, I don't know any other famous chemists...

So who is he referring to? Luis Alvarez for his work on resonant states in particle physics? George Smoot for his work on the Colour Me Badd detector? Or one of the dudes from this year for the quantum tunneling stuff. If the latter, then I also deserve one for working on it back in the 90s at TI.

Among the many humiliations of being American in the current moment is this: Members of the tech right and the conservative ruling class continually fetishize objects of nerd culture while also displaying a willful inability to grasp the very basic messages those objects are sending.

You will never convince me that the best series didn't come from the 80s: Miami Vice, Knight Rider, The A-Team, etc. Perhaps the best of them was a little-known gem on cable TV known as "Robin of Sherwood", an edgy retelling of the medieval legend with an eclectic soundtrack by Irish group Clannad.

So cool! Turns out frogs can escape from boxes if they find the resonant frequency - the so-called doorway state - at which they can leapfrog beyond an expectation value. It sounds similar to the tunneling phenomena in resonant tunneling devices.
Now if we could just observe the darn frog doing it.

The end of an era. I grew up as part of the MTV generation, and it feels like yet another part of my soul has died. Of course, it makes sense since we can watch videos anytime we want on YouTube, etc. But it is still a bittersweet moment.

If Trump gets a Nobel, it will have the effect of lowering the energy level of all electrons in the universe to below the ground state, causing an instantaneous collapse of the wavefunction that binds together the fabric of reality so that it unravels & twists itself into an as-yet-unknown topology.
