This trio of headless figures were found at Vercovicium Roman Fort (Housesteads), Northumberland on Hadrian’s Wall.
They represent Matres or mother-goddesses carrying cups & fruits.
Roman military communities payed respect to local deities.

1. Vindolanda fort and vicus a decade ago. It’s a Stanegate fort. Earlier forts lie beneath the later fort of Coh IV Gallorum (built 3rd C AD).
2. Housesteads/Vercovicium fort on #HadriansWall, constructed between AD 122-130.

My photo shows a thin, rectangular, dark brown leaf of wood, which is broken in places. Across the surface are six lines of cursive Latin handwriting. The text is written in black ink which appears faded and faint. The Latin reads: nenụ ...[.]n. Brittoneṣ nimium multi ‣ equites gladis ‣ non ụtụṇtur equi- tes ‣ nec residunt Brittunculi ‣ ụt ‣ iaculos mittant Translated as: … the Britons are unprotected by armour (?). There are very many cavalry. The cavalry do not use swords nor do the wretched Britons mount in order to throw javelins. On display at the British Museum.

A certain site in Dorset has been in the news this week for its imminent TV appearance, so for #EpigraphyTuesday here is evidence that those Durotriges got everywhere! In the wonderful museum at Chesters on Hadrian's Wall, recording their building work. 1/3
A carved stone with two lines of an inscription sits on a shelf in a museum. The first line of the inscription reads 'C DVR[O]TR[I]G'. Red lettering on the plinth reads: 'Record of building work by the civitas of the Durotrigian people of Lindinis (Ilchester).' At bottom left is the word 'Cawfields' [where this piece was found]. At top right is 'RIB 1672' and at bottom right is 'B263' and 'CH267'.

Great to see his contribution to the study of Roman archaeology in his local town recognised, and to have Mayor of South Tyneside Jay Potts and Mayoress Audrey Huntley in attendance.
