Moments ago: tenants of the South Shore apartment building that federal immigration agents raided at the end of September held a presser to announce they're forming a tenants union.

They're demanding, among other things, sewage removal and heat and electricity restroration.

On Wednesday, City Council passed a ban on algorithmic rent-setting software used by corporate landlords to collude on rent prices.

Thank you @councilormorillo.bsky.social @councilorgreen.bsky.social @councilortkl.bsky.social for your commitment to making our city affordable for everyone!

Councilor Sameer Kanal diagnosed the different sides of this issue as “status quo versus change.” He pointed out that half of Portlanders are renters, but they've been underrepresented in local leadership, and cast aside accordingly. Ryan seemed to take that as an affront to homeowners like himself.

@portlanddsa.bsky.social along with renters and allies will hold a rally at Portland City Hall in support of the ban.

Sweeps make the lives of our unhoused neighbors worse. Funds should go to rental assistance that keeps people housed. Portland must act now, especially as the federal government fails to serve its citizens.

Let's end Mayor Wilson's war on the poor.
