The US-brokered peace plan for Ukraine is not a piece plan. If adopted, it will be the premise of more conflict in Europe with a reinforced Russia.

Canada has banned assault-style long guns and all handguns. A buyback program is launched this Fall with an amnesty period till October 2026. After that, owning a banned weapon will lead to criminal charges. Australia and New Zealand have done the same. To our US neighbours…see, this can be done.

Justice is a human process and, therefore, imperfect. No one should deliver through an imperfect process an irreversible ruling. The death penalty is illogical.

Any territorial concession to 🇷🇺 would be a grave strategic mistake! It would validate the aggression and rehabilitate the expansion of borders by force.

Taking a hard look at how white straight men have voted in the west in the last decade…I would be willing to give up my right to vote for few cycles if it meant we would have the kind of results that a women-only vote would have generated over the last ten years.

I didn’t foresee it would controversial to say: vaccines work and don’t cause autism, earths is round, tarifs are a taxe, moon is real and we walked on it, plane don’t spread chemical, 5 G doesn’t cause cancer or Covid, socialism isn’t communism, Russia invaded Ukraine, January 6 was a crime.

For all her craziness, MTG seems to be slowly discovering that she is a closet libertarian and that Trump is not.

When Margaret Atwood wrote The Handmaid’sTail, I don’t think she knew how much of a premonition of the USA under MAGA it was. I wonder what she feels about reality challenging our best dystopian fantasies.

Easy end to Ukrainian war. Russia goes home. UN establishes DMZ on border. Ukrainian Russian-speaking oblasts get special status with power over culture and education, Russian and Ukrainian are official languages there. Both parties recognize their borders and sovereignty.

The Nobel Foundation looks rather dimly on those who actively campaign for a peace prize. It chooses recipients who tend to honestly believe that they are unworthy as a testament to there altruistic nature. Claiming you deserve the prize is the best way to ensure you will not receive it.

There’s one good side to the current state of the world: teaching about non-democratic concepts has gotten easier, what with all the examples around.

Did Trump see some dystopian post-apocalyptic movie and someone told him it was Portland?

Just curious, if the President of the USA was setting up a dictatorship, how would that look any different than what is currently happening?

The Socratic saying « The more I know, the more I understand that I know nothing » seems to work in reverse as well. The less some know, the more the feel omniscient. Confident ignorami will be the end of civilization if we can’t make real knowledge popular again.

Kirk’s assassination I regret, his absence not so much. He promoted and organized violence against anyone who stood against white supremacy, gun culture of Christian nationalism. He had hit lists of folks for his horde to threaten their lives and livelihood. He was a despicable person.

It’s strange that the government set up in the USA by the party that constantly decries « socialism » and « communism » looks more and more like Soviet Russia at it’s worst.

Is there someone in 🍊´s entourage who is feeding him the none sense he spews? Are they telling him he will get the Nobel peace prize, was in the running to be pope or is the President of Europe? To whomever is doing that: stop it! Stop it now!

Any concession of Ukrainian land to Russia will open Pandora’s box and release of kinds of evils onto the world. The sovereignty of nations must be upheld or we will go back to a time where the mighty prey on the weak and as imperialists compete in their predation, world conflict will follow.

There is no absolute truth; only our current understanding of the world. Those who know this, learn to doubt with reason. Those who don’t attack knowledge for being full of doubt. This is why, in an imperfect world, ignorance has an advantage over science. Certainty inherent in myth is appealing.

Humans are creative creatures. We are imaginative and enjoy making things up. Fiction is our favourite literature. As a creative outlet in cinema, music, theatre, it‘s great. If we believe our own fiction and live in it, we‘re in trouble. Science and fact is what keeps us from chaos.

The EU - US trade deal is political and not legally binding. It will have to be ratified to come into force. In the EU, that means approval of the Commission, the Council (State Leaders) and Parliament. It may be a hard sell at the Council and Parliament,

What is the measure of a country’s success? It it GDP when wealth is going to a few? Is it military strength even if there are homelessness people at home? Is it freedom if most are too poor to enjoy basic necessities? Could it be human development for all and sharing the benefits of civilization?

Authoritarianism has been around since the dawn of humanity. Aristotle wrote of the devolution of democracy into tyranny. Montesquieu spoke of concentration of power. Arendt and Aaron described totalitarian rule. The authoritarian playbook has been known for a long time. Why is it still effective?

The rise of extremism is a resurgence. These ideas are old. We wrongly believed that we had done away with them for good, but primitive human instincts are resilient. Decades of public instruction after WW2 did not rid us of them. We should ask why. What is it about us that clings to intolerance?
