Abraham Lincoln, by the way, in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, was the one who signed the proclamation establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday to seek “the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.”
In 1859, Sarah Josepha Hale wrote an editorial advocating for Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Why?
“Everything that contributes to bind us in one vast empire together, to quicken the sympathy that makes us feel…we are one family…is worthy of being cherished.”
That was her hope for America.
