It's honestly kind of insane to me that the people who decry subsidies and how things like first time homebuyer programs just increase prices line up straight behind one of the most insane ways to waste public money while getting worse outcomes.

Biggest upzoning in American history for now
Quite possibly the biggest upzoning in American history

The biggest failure of Texas is that of focus. If we, as a people, just focussed for a few years on really committing to a strong vision of the future we'd leave any other competition in the dust. Half measures and culture war distractions have been so extraordinarily damaging to the state
Even when they discuss the dangerous and radical things some in the state they to do they miss why and how it happens. And they miss all of the great and wonderful things that happen at every level every year.

I continue to be somewhat amazed and confounded by the role Texas plays in political discussions. Less a real place where real people live and more a metaphysical object to be rebuked or idolized by people who know less than nothing of the state
It’s kind of maddening that there are 32 million people in this state and yet Texas politics remains totally illegible to people living on the coasts because we have no prestige media ecosystem.

Texas making things “easy to build” is not a singular lever that we switched on one day
Feel like I’m missing something about the political/factional pitch of abundance. If Texas is an example of a place where it’s easy to build and live, then why have decades of that being the case not turned the state blue? If anything it’s become a laboratory for the right’s most heinous policies

I don't know how we could even start to fix this problem but the current system of low cost and subsidized housing is way too hard to navigate and biased towards people with insider connections
A heartbreaking aspect of running a housing advocacy organization is the sheer number of requests you get for direct help with locating low-cost housing from people who desperately need it.

“I never thought I’d have a pope like this in my lifetime,” a priest I know told me. “It must be divine providence, I can’t think of any other explanation.”

I wrote about Pope Francis.

Big fan of the new episode of @jackcraver.bsky.social's podcast ft. @vanessaforatx.bsky.social - urban-affairs.simplecast.com/episodes/van.... Especially loved the discussion around how she engages with her constituents and why Republicans have been gaining ground with Latinos

and fwiw, there is a pretty easy path to feeling like a "hero" if a given man wants to take it — it is being a responsible member of your community, a provider for your family and being a good role model for the younger men around you.

What Cambridge has done here is outline an incredible middle path where we can build Parisian missing middle density city wide. I think Austin can learn a lot from this, building out starter home friendly units in a way that fits easily into existing neighborhoods
Cambridge is 6.4 sq mi. The Austin equivalent would be bounded by Lamar and I-35 from the river to 290, all 6 stories.
Are we gonna let Cambridge beat us at the housing game? Or do we have the guts to beat them too?
I can’t believe it - after years of advocacy, exclusionary zoning has ended in Cambridge.

We just passed the single most comprehensive rezoning in the US—legalizing multifamily housing up to 6 stories citywide in a Paris style

Here’s the details 🧵

Just received this photo from a friend of a warehouse in Kinshasa. These are tuberculosis medications--ALREADY PAID FOR--that aren't being distributed due to the Trump Administration's stop work order.
TB treatment is being interrupted in SO many patients around the world. What does that mean? (1/2)

NEW: Trump says he's letting "lifesaving" foreign aid continue, but sources tell WIRED that DOGE is still blocking HIV/AIDS relief.

Musk brags he's "feeding USAID into the wood chipper."

A USAID worker tell us: “At a minimum, 300 babies that wouldn’t have had HIV now do."

Completed agreed, though in addition to this for broader "democracy" reform I think we have to implement random ballot order. So no candidate gets the advantage of being first in all ballots
In the future we really ought to amend the charter to switch to approval voting. That way we can avoid unnecessary runoffs & not force the electorate to worry about candidates splitting the vote.

We wouldn't even need to change how the ballots look!
Kirk Watson appears to have been re-elected for another term as Mayor.

Williamson County reported its final 53 votes, he won 36% of them. Final margin versus a runoff was 14 votes.

From my experience especially talking to the more working class or entrepreneurial members of my family, I think also talking about the housing can reinvigorate/improve existing commercial spaces can be a easy foot in the door to helping them see the value of pro housing policies
