I hadn’t thought of it this way, but yes. Expenses of just existing make hobbies of passion nearly impossible.
makes me weep to think of the gifts robbed from us because unaffordable housing has made it difficult for people to pursue their passions and hobbies

Historically in other countries, you could make a list of the provinces sending troops to a fascist leader to identify who the loyalist states would be in a civil war. (Of course, this would be impossible in the United States.)
So now five states, mostly southern, all with GOP govs, have said they will send National Guard troops to DC.

I keep thinking about Hurricane Katrina, and the way the Guard was used then to subdue and terrorize vulnerable Black and brown people deemed a threat that needed to be met with armed force

Multiple times this year I’ve had coffee with fellow immigrants who grew up in corrupt third world countries and the shared sentiment has been that Americans don’t understand how bad things are going to get.

We are losing the last of the generation who understand just how evil actual fascism is, how hard it is to rid the world of authoritarian governments once they’re established, and how hard it is to build a successful alternative. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/what-we-lo...

the USA built a system of higher education so good that smart/rich people from across the world came here, spending billions to learn here, subsidizing education for Americans while spending money to live in our cities and towns. our government arbitrarily decided we should stop doing that
The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact
