If they aren’t a registered charity and they aren’t registered with the Fundraising Regulator (example logo below), it’s probably one of these scammy orgs where the ‘profit’ is a tiny fraction of the money you handed over and some bastard gets rich on your good intentions. Give to a real charity.

“If it goes away when you take your meds it’s probably not a character flaw” is something I have to tell myself often.

#SelfCareSunday This week sucked. My baseline was low.

Tonight I sat on the porch while taking my evening meds and watched the sunset fade away.

Then Spousal Unit turned on the Christmas lights for me to enjoy.

After dinner, I enjoyed some dark chocolate.

Subtweet for ALL of the people in my family who want me to tell them what I'd like for holiday gifts because they're TOO f'ing lazy to do the work:

STOP GIVING ME A CHORE LIST FOR GIFT-GIVING OCCASIONS!!

I'm ALREADY figuring out what to give YOU - don't make me figure out what YOU should give ME!

Unlike most vaccine-preventable diseases, hepatitis B is asymptomatic and spreads silently until infected people develop liver cancer or cirrhosis in their midlife. It’s one of the cancers with the highest mortality in the U.S with a 6 month life expectancy.

Let's be very clear that one of the major effects of the CDC no longer recommending various vaccinations is that it becomes much harder for folks who still want to be—or want their children to be—vaccinated to get their insurance providers to cover those vaccinations.

Trying to find a professional way to say "Oh, I understand it; I just don't like it!" Or, "It may be legal, but it's still a scam."

The artifice of civility oft makes me long for the directness of military communication.

I can't even this week.

Just one of those weeks of chronic illness malaise in which nothing is accomplished, despite the looming mound of things which need to be accomplished.

Bleh.

Read @juliametraux.bsky.social's latest. The findings are concerning on their own, but are amplified by the fact that many workplaces rely on freelancers for basic functioning.

When I worked at NBC, many roles were required to be a contractor for a year before being eligible for benefits.
For @motherjones.com, I wrote about what's at stake for chronically ill contractors and freelancers as Affordable Care Act enhanced tax credits expire.

When you're already sick, the possibility of not being able to afford health insurance at all is terrifying. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
For many contractors, losing ACA subsidies means losing health care
The GOP's unprecedented premium hikes put chronically ill workers—especially freelancers—in peril.

Just imagining how much better it would be if ALL news stories about vaccine-preventable illnesses were illustrated with pictures of people with the disease, not pictures of needle injections. If you must show something that people will find scary & unpleasant, make it the disease, not the cure.
I'm so tired of measles.

I'm also tired of people using needle shots on stories like this.

Show what measles looks like.

Two years ago, when the school district was planning to install a new play area that wasn't accessible to some classmates, 4th-graders mounted a petition drive to block the design. They went to the school board meeting with "Play for ALL" signs.

Then they set out to create a worthy replacement.

Someone who bought a frog facts advent calendar for a friend's kid last year just emailed me.

Apparently that kid got a different advent calendar this year, and when he opened it he said, “These are HORRIBLE! They’re not teaching me anything about frogs!”

This kid gets it.
