ICYMI: At The British Book Awards on Monday, I made the point from the stage of how human this sector is [...] books train us, not computers, and they make us into the better humans we need to be, says @philipdsjones.bsky.social in this week's editor's letter 👇 #BookSky

What’s supposed to happen?

If my daughter is out and masked men grab her, claiming they’re ICE, drag her away w/out letting her prove she’s a citizen… w/out calling me, her dad… what is she supposed to do?

Does she not have the right to fight back, as we have taught her, to free herself. Run?

@charlottewood.bsky.social just finished Stone Yard Devotional- what a beautiful & thought-provoking book about faith (or lack of it), forgiveness and having the space to simply ‘be’.

The bewildering thing about this AI copyright debate is how rigid copyright rules are in many other areas. If you’re writing a novel and you want a character to sing one line of ‘Gimme Shelter’ in the bath, you have to pay the Rolling Stones about £5000.

4. Read whatever you want in 2025. Read as little or as much as you like. Read on a kindle. Read second hand. Read from a library. Borrow books. Steal books (not from independent bookstores). Read banned books. Read audio books. Read books nobody else is talking about. Just read. Over and out.

What's interesting about this trend for book marketing AI companies—who secure £Xmil in seed funding, get a write-up in the Bookseller, and will now wither away, leaving only a slime trail of AI generated goop across the surface of culture—is mainly what it says about capital’s engagement with books
